Overheating problem

Buddy of mine has a 95 Z. Has an electric waterpump as long as a few other mods including a hot cam kit. He seems to have an over heating problem when doing stop and go driving, on the highway its fine, he says his fans are coming on properly. He also said he has a 170 degree t-stat. Is there such a thing for these cars? What happens if its not a t-stat designed for the LT1. Could it be causing his problems? He has tried flushing the radiator already.

Any ideas? What can we check.

Stock therm is 180, they do make a 160 that he could be talking about. As for the over heating, you say he is sure his fans are coming on, and he isnt leaking anti-freeze i assume. My guess would HAVE to be 2 things:

1) The therm is not opening all the way or sticking
2) The System has air in it, when he flushed it, did he bleed the system?
