Optispark/Timing Question...

Just replaced Opti and water pump on 94 Trans Am. Everything went together exceptionally well. However, when I went to crank the car it was definitely out of time and would not crank. I am certain the Opti was installed correctly. How do I get this jewel back in time, do I have to re-do the install or can this be done through the computer? Thanks in advance.

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

Sounds like you need to recheck the indexing on the splined drive shaft.

Did you loc-tite the rotor screws?

And make sure you have the plug wires in the correct order.

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

Injuneer, thanks for the reply.

I did loc-tite the rotor screws and I have the scraps and bruises on my arms from checking and re-checking the spark plug wires

Sounds like I am going to have to take her back apart and double check everything. Thanks again.

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

One other thing I will suggest is to make sure the pins on the optiharness are making good contact with the optispark plug. When I replaced my optispark I did the usual opti test with a multimeter and the probe spread the connectors enough so they were not making contact. After everything was back together the car still wouldn't start, I squeezed the connector pins back together and bam, good to go. Just a suggestion you can try before taking apart the car again, otherwise I agree withe Injuneer, time to recheck the alignment....

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

I will certainly check that Wild Bill. Thanks. Is it common to get a bad Opti?

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

If you bought a cheap Opti off ebay, they frequently fail out of the box. There are often problems with "store brand" replacements, Chandler, Accel, etc.

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

What did you do to determine it was the Opti causing low power? Scan if for codes? Check the fuel pressure?

What were the symptoms of low power - any misfires, poor fuel mileage, smelled rich, hit a wall at a particular RPM?

Is the car stock? What trans?

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

Well the car is stock with no rev. limiter i slung a rod and had to put a crank kit in after that the car runs poor bad gas mileage after a lot of a review on ls1tech everyone seem to point to the Opti I've had conflicts about how to set the timing on the crank one says both at 6 o'clock the other says 6 and12 believe it or not I tried both ways and the car ran the same after putting a timing at 6 and 12 I replace the Opti and still no change

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

My next step is checking fuel pressure I'm wondering if it might be fuel regulator

Re: Optispark/Timing Question...

Have you seen the timing set alignment and Optispark drive alignement procedures on Shoebox's website? This is the best source of info on the LT1 on the 'net.
