optispark/timing question

I have searched and searched and could not find a thread with similar issues... Anyway, I bought a Formula recently that doesn't run. It has LE heads, cam, pro mag rockers, CSR wp, ported intake/TB, Pacesetter LTs, no cats, and the opti was replaced when the heads and cam were put on(going off of the info the seller told me)

I have checked the opti using the methods I found on Shoebox's site. ALL checked out good on both ends of opti harness. ICM harness checked out. opti and ICM are good according to these methods.

It has spark at coil, spark at plug with plug pulled out of head with plug wire attached and grounded on header.

Got 42psi at the shrader valve with key on, and about 47psi while cranking.

codes were p0100 and a p0135 with actron scanner.

fuses are good.

When it failed, I was not there so I cannot describe what happened or how it sounded. His description was: he was merging on the highway at about 3500rpm, it revved up, sorta bogged, and then revved again and he put it in nuetral **** it off and coasted off the road. has not tried to start it since. Now I have it to figure out.

When I crank the engine over with coil wire unplugged, it cranks really smooth. However, when the coil wire is connected, it cranks about a half revolution and then it seems to stall out the starter. Kind of like its firing a cylinder waay out of time.

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Re: optispark/timing question

Mine died the other week when driving, hit the cruise off with the brake and it backfired and died. Had spark into the opti and weak spark to a cylinder i checked. Rotor screws fell out, gm opti with under 2000 miles on it.

I think I'd check the rotor.

good call sir. I ended up finding time to take opti off this evening. As soon as I had it out I heard something parts moving around inside, and one spin of the shaft I knew it wasn't right (even though I've never had one out before). Took it apart and indeed the rotor and all the guts were just lying in the housing not doing anything. The two little culprits were just sitting in there. The next one WILL be loctited.

Thanks
