ok, earlier today i installed my new opti. it starts up, but then it starts studdering and hear here a metal whining noise and it shuts down. my friend thikns its the dowel pin from the opti that goes into the front cover, i want to hear what other ideas are as i really do not want to have to go do it again

Re: opti install problem

common mistake is crossed plug wires at the opti
check and double check that they are all in the right order!

Re: opti install problem

Was replacing the opti the only work being done?

Talking Re: opti install problem

I've installed a defective opti more than once, stop wasting time take it off, take it to where you got it, and tell them you want another one because it's defective, and start over from scratch, making sure your pin are in right and your wires are pluged in right.

I say this because if you don't you be playing the guessing game wich is a real problem with LT-1s!

Re: opti install problem

Since you now say you also put a cam in, did you check the dowel pin length? That seems much more likely than some sort of gear interference.

Re: opti install problem

the dowel pin length on the cam is perfect. the car ran for a week, then i just changed out the opti because it was bad. i just taook my opti off and the pin wasn't even spinning inside the opti. i have a new pin, and now i am wondering which side goes into the cam, and which side goes into the opti

Re: opti install problem

Since you have a 94 with an unvented Opti, the cam cowel pin does not drive the Opti. Or are you calling the splined shaft that connects the cam sprocket to the back of the Opti a "dowel pin"? If you put that splined shaft in the wrong way (easier to do than most people think), its not going to run very well, since the timing will be off.

Re: opti install problem

Sorry, I scanned this too fast and did not notice it was a 94.

Re: opti install problem

ok, the spline pin i tried a bunch of ways and put it in the way that fit best, that being the straight cut way and smaller spline into cam, and the bigger side into the opti. i think this opti is bad. it runs worse than the last one. some water got on it when i pulled the water pump again. i think i am just going to order a full one from GM. this is really getting aggravating.

the car now studders are i am driving, when i got WOT all it does is pop and does not accelerate. it wants to stall. on the highway i couild not go over 80, it was physically impossible. i did notice i was getting some arcing off the spark plug off cylinder 3, but i guess these engines do that a bit. anyone have any other idea? i am returned the checker opti and going to get a GM one for starters, but i am really open to any suggestion.
