Opinions about this cam

If i read this correctly the part number is CCA-07-503-8

here are the specs.

Duration at 050 inch Lift: 224 int./230 exh.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.503 int./0.510 exh. lift
Lobe Sep. 112 degree

with 1.6 rockers
224/230 .536/.544 112

I am looking for a new cam for the car, for a winter project.

Has anyone used it??
What power typically do people see with it? On a 383 peferrably

I do have emissions, I have passed with a LT4 hotcam, but i need some more power than that. I currently have.

218/224 dur. .525/.525 w/ 112 lobe sep. (hotcam)

I figure 6 more degrees intake and exhuast coupled with more lift should get me rolling good.

I am not looking for a general answer, or what you have "heard" of. I need some facts. I know this isnt the best 383 cam BUT I have emissions and they are hear to stay, I MUST pass. So to get a little bit more out of the motor and still pass is my objective. I also have every single bolt on avalible for the car.

Can anyone help?

Only one way to find out. If you didn't have to go to great lengths to get your vehicle to pass with the hotcam, you can pass with the 503. After all, there are quite a few "tricks" you can do to fool the analyzer. One big thing is running the engine a lot hotter than you normally would. 1.5 rockers for the test would help too. Anything to avoid major work or obvious changes for test purposes. I'm sure those test folks are sick of people filling up their tanks with all sorts of wierd concoctions just to pass.

Re: Opinions about this cam

Yea, I hear yea about the tricks.

What I do is get a brand new CAT (not broken in), get it as close as possible to the engine, BUT with LT headers thats not possible..... ugggh. But i put my 180 thermo in her, bottle of rubbing alcohol on a near empty tank. Leave her running outside the dealership where I get tested. I passed with a rich PCMforless.com tune.

Now its passing with a slightly bigger cam. beleive me I wish I had ODB2, its so easy to pass with those.

The hotcam is 218/228, not 218/224.

Re: Opinions about this cam

I have this cam, but its on a stock bottom end car. Its a decent cam IMO, nice broad powerband. Sounds pretty mean at idle. i used to have the LT4 Hotcam in my AFR 190 headed 355 in my old firebird, and to be honest..this engine stock headed, stock bottom ended car with the 224/230 pulls just as hard. So take that as you may, I think its a good cam.

Re: Opinions about this cam

BSM,

It seems as though guys with 383’s can get a cam with 12-13 degrees overlap to pass with some tuning and tricks. The 224/230 cam has 3 degrees overlap, so it shouldn’t be a problem whatsoever, especially in a 383…

You could always do a custom grind...
