a cutout is kind alike a fork in the road in the exhaust... its generally put on the y-pipe before the cat... and its just a quick exit for the exhaust gases... it bypasses the cat and the muffler, pretty much like running straight header or manifold...

Are their any performance gains to be had with this mod or is it just for sound effects?

lol... hard to hear sound effects when your deaf...

a cutout is PSYCOTICALLY (sp?) loud...

the gains are enormous...! its one of the easiest mods you can do for alot of HP. the great thing about it is, you can even leave the factory exhaust on, and still get free-flowing numbers at the track.

if you have the stock exhaust and a somewhat modded lt1... you can get up to 30hp from a cutout...

its basically, freeing up restriction, COMPLETELY...

go for an electric one...

they are about a hundred bucks, one flip of a toggle switch, and boom... no exhaust restriction...

its also great when those ricers pull up next to you at the stop light, and you can open and close it at will without having to get under the car..

I take it you still run a pipe from the cutout to the out of the car right?

umm... i guess you could if you wanted to...

but that would take alot of fabbing... and unless you made the pipe really wide, it would hurt the flow of the cutout.

but then again... 3 or 5 exhaust tips would look kinda weird..

not to mention how hard it would be to route the pipe under the car without SERIOUSLY hurting ground clearence

not to mention the fact that your not gonna be driving around with it open, so it doesn't matter

Cool I found what you are talking about http://www.thunderracing.com/images/cutout.jpg, any tips though on any caertain brand or what brands that may be the best. The average cost if these things are around $35 from what I see, which ones cost around $100? Also when it comes to the size of the cutout I take it bigger is better right?

well $35 is about the price of a regular cut out... and electric setup should be about $100...

the bigger the better?

uhh... im pretty sure their measurement should be the same as the size of pipe you are attaching it to... thats probably why their are different sizes...
