Question oil pressure ???

I just recently replaced my opti an broke one of the bolts so therefor I had to pull my timing cover to get it out. The oil pan gasket ripped but I had to get my car running so I tried to repair it without replacing the gasket. I can't exactly recall what the oil pressure ran before but thought it was around 20 at idol and 40 throughout driving. It is now sitting at 8-10 and hardly reached up to 20 throughout driving. Does the gsket have anything to do with pressure?

Also I tried to repair it with a little rtv so I hope a little peice did not get in the oil pump.

Also I didn't even know where to start on changing the pan gasket so what is the easiest way to do that?

thanks alot
Josh

I dont think the gasket has anything to do with oil presure. But it is possible to change out the gasket while the motor is installed it takes some time. If you decide to do this I can e-mail you how I did mine.

Does the oil presure seem like its running low though?
I also put some thinner oil in but I don't think that matters?

thanks

i have a haynes manual and in there i dont remember where i foudn ti but the oil pressure has to be like at least 10 at idle i think. not sure to be exact im looking in my haynes now for the info. if you cant even get to 20 when driving heres my advice, dont drive it until you get it fixed. this seems abnormal to me. another thing u can check is the oil pressure sensor located right next to the filter on the oil pan i think is wheree its at. heres my oil pressure. on a cold start up like first time in the morning its about 55-60 psi and when it warms up and idles down it stays at around 40 or so and after i have been driving it for a while and it is fully warmed up it will idle at about 20-25lbs. this has always been this waysince i bought the car. these readings sound normal and good to me. i get good oil pressure all the time so thtas good. but if you only getting 8-10 at idle and close to 20 when driving that doesnt seem right. could be the sensor like i siaid heard it goes out easily. let us know what you find out.

A very rough "rule of thumb" is 10 psi per 1000 rpm.

It absolutely does matter...viscosity & pressure have a direct relationship in all fluid systems. Generally thinner oil = lower pressure, especially when the ambient temps are high. Unless you're trying to mask an oil pressure issue (low), I'd stick with the GM reccomended viscosity of oil. I found my oil pressure improved significantly just changing from old, broken down viscosity oil, to fresh, correct viscosity oil.
I'd start by changing back to the correct oil & see what your oil pressure does from there. I'm betting it will be back to "normal"

When I bought the car the guy ran 15-50 mobil 1 its whole life. I was working on my car late and the only oil I could find was 10-30 mobil1 at wal-mart but I didn't think it would lower the pressure enough to never get over 20.

When I start the car it runs at 40 for about 2 min and then goes back to 10 at idol and then never reaches over 20?

thanks
Josh

I will check out the sensor, is there any way to test it or do I have to just replace it

I want to check and se if the sensor is correct. How do I do this? Do I just get a manual gauge and start the car and see what kind of pressure I am getting. That would tell me if the electronic sensor is wrong right?

LMK if there is an easier way

thanks
