Oil Pressure
Oil Pressure
I just got a 97 trans am ram air convertible. I have noticed that the oil pressure seems to be low around 40 psi while idleing. My friend has a 95 ta and says his pressure is running around 60 psi while idleing. I was thinking it might be the oil pump is going bad. Anybody have any ideas?
Yeah, they seem to vary a bit (one car to the next) but 40 psi is nothing to worry about. Definitely not "too low" for idle. What pressures are you seeing at say 4500 rpm thru redline?
More oil pressure can be a good thing but it can also cost a few hp.

mine idles @ 65psi when i first start it, after its been run for a while, it'll drop down to 40psi. When the motor is revved it goes all the way up to 80psi depending on how high i rev it. Of course, The motor has ~3000 miles on it and a melling high volume oil pump.
Miles
How many miles do you guys have on you're cars? My odometer says 50k but i am worried that it might be wrong because the oil pressure is so low....correction to what i said earlier the oil pressure is at 20 psi at start and 40 psi when warm.
mine as well...40 (half tick maybe little over)..then 15 minutes of warming...18-20 at hot idle and 40 no matter what rpm after that (even redline)...i have been told this is good..i run 10W30 Mobil 1 synthetics since day 1
