Oil pan removal?

I've got a 94' Z with the setup in my sig. Whats the best way that you guys have found, to remove/replace the engine oil pan/gasket and pump pickup? Id rather not drop the k-member to do it, but I can as a last resort.

Never replaced a pickup with the motor in the car before but with a Felpro blue gasket you can unbolt one of the motor mounts and lift the engine up just enough to stretch the gasket around the oil pan and into place.

There are some posts that claim that loosening the engine mounts and jacking the engine up by the crank pulley gives you enough clearance to get the pan off; I have always used an engine bar and dropped the k-member.

I've removed the pan with engine in the car. Lift it off its' mounts, turn the crank to have the arrow pointing straight up, pull the oil level sensor and lift the dipstick tube up 4 inches. Then wiggle the pan out....

I wouldn't jack the engine under the crank pulley... you'll damage the rubber that connects the inner and outer rings of the damper. Might bend or break the hub as well. Use a hoist/lift bar.

If you have an m6, you will have to drop the k member a few inches. I just did my 93 trans am two days ago. Just unbolt the struts from the lower control arms and loosen the 6 bolts that hold the k.

Re: Oil pan removal?

You do not have to touch the k member on an M6 car. I used 4" long bolts in the transmission crossmember so the tranny could lower as the engine was lifted.

Worked perfectly....

Yea, I wouldn't jack up the engine using the crank pulley. I 've got an A4 car btw. I think we have an engine lift bar at work. That may be the way to go...

Re: Oil pan removal?

When I did the pan gasket in my '97 i just unbolted the pan and let it drop as far as it would. (Take out the oil level sensor first). Cut the old gasket and took off, cleaned pan and block with acetone-then I cut the gasket at a long angle on the driver's side about midway, put it on and sealed the cut place with a little Ultra-Copper when I put it back together. When I sold the car it had yet to drip a single drop from that gasket.

I was told later that you could actually stretch the gasket over the pan without tearing it but it was too late for me to try.
