oil leak ? after oil change

I changed the oil yesterday. Last year I had every oil leak fixed, the usual culprits. No oil since that was done. Bone dry floor. I changed the oil and used mobil 1. I have heard and read that synth "reveals" areas that leak. I am positive that the plug and filter are tight. i drove the car about 10 miles, parked it, and now have a nice sized puddle ( 5 in round or so) would it be best to change back to reg oil? any guesses if going back to reg oil will make my leak go away? This just ticks me off since I spent so much getting the engine not to leak.....

Synthetic oil didn't cause that leak. You need to look for the real problem.

Check that oil filter and make sure you didn't put it on with the old filters o-ring still stuck to the engine. Did that once a long time ago on my brothers mustang... talk about a mess. (It's also one of those mistakes you only do once, )

so so you think it is coincedence that it started leaking? The pan and filter are dry. Just checked again. leak must be up higher. The only reason i know this to be fact is that my floor was painted white 1 year ago and not a spot on it.

Question. do you check oil warm or cold. I have debated this since I started changing oil 20 years ago. When I check cold the level is a little high. I never gave it thought before, but now that it is leaking, can too much oil cause a leak? I know i am grasping at straws....

Sometimes if you tighten the filter too tight it will leak, happens all the time on my LT-1 and also on my suburban. Rule of thumb is tighten until the filter touches and then a 1/2 to 3/4 turn futher.

daveoo...I actually only hand tighten my filters. I might tighten a little more because of leak. I was just checking under the car again, and the filter and plug are bone dry. if they were to leak, I should be able to see proof of a leak. As a rule of thumb I always wipe everyhting down real well when i change my oil.

Good point, you'll prob have some oil on the filter if that were the culprit. Check your front cover as I just recently had to change my wp and crank seals as they were leaking. Look for a line of oil running down the timing cover and oil on the sway bar as that's a dead give away.

Bringing this one back. Update. I am still leaking. I have a hard time beliving that the repairs done to the motor for oil leaks have failed at the same time I switched to Synthetics. I am so frustrated.

How many had oil leaks after switching to synth? I thought it was just a myth that synth leaks more than regular.

Should I try High Milage oil? I heard it helps with leaks. Any experience?

Lastly what about a stop leak additive?

Thanks

You need to find the leak and fix it right.I am guessing your intake is leaking.Run your finger along the top rear edge.Oil leaks arent that hard to find, especially bad ones.If you cant find it,buy the dye and a light to see it.

I had the intake and rear main fixed along with valve covers. It was fine until the synth. Not saying there isnt a leak somewhere, Just upset since it showed up right after the change to synth oil. I agree I need to find and fix, but I am not spending another$1500 to fix a leak that didnt exist until synth was used.
