Oil/Fuel Additives: Truth or Gimmick?

Greetings all!

I'm a firm believer in additives at 94,000 miles, but I'm wondering if I'm possibly making a mistake here. I've heard GM makes a crankcase additive to put in when you change your oil - has anyone heard of it and happen to know the name of it, and if it's of any use? I hate that all I know is what I hear, so I'm trying to find some things out for myself... If GM does indeed make an oil additive, I'd be more than interested in hearing about it from any of you who have experimented with it.

Now for fuel additives. I swear by 93 octane gasoline, but I also buy a bottle of STP octane booster for every tank, and a bottle of STP fuel system treatment every other tank. It gets a tad costly, and now I'm wondering if I am indeed doing myself any good, or if my car would run exactly the same without it. Anyone else addicted to additives? I do *think* I notice differences in my idle, response, and acceleration throughout my gears, but it could be mental. Any thoughts are welcome, and thank you for satisfying my curiosity!

I have heard that as far as injector cleaner goes, you add it at around every 3000 miles. I do mine when I change the oil so it keeps me on schedule. I havent heard of the GM crankcase additive though.

I've only used the Chevron Techron in the fuel, and thats every 3000 miles or so. and I've really only used it twice ever. The octane booster, I'd just fill up with sunoco 94 octane, its like 6 or 7 cents more for a gallon than their 93 octane, so its like only a $1 diff for a full tank. I used it for a while, but now I just use 93. never heard of the GM crankcase additive...but it might exist.

Most (not all) G.M. Dealers use a oil additive from a company called Wynn's. I use it every oil change. Gives me better fuel mileage by reducing the friction.
It's called "Supreme".
Highway mileage went from 26 to 30.5 mpg

if you read the bottle of octane booster closely it say it raises the octane one point which is .1 not a full octane point.put you a gallon of tolulene in ten gallons of 93 octane an dend up with 95 octane.

dont waste your time with octane booster from walmart.

So the octane booster is a waste, alrighty. 93 octane should do me? How about the fuel injector cleaner additive it recommends to use every other tank? Any thoughts? The octane booster just got thrown out the door

Only oil additive I know of is the Posi additive. Good grade of prem with ethonol should be all that you need.

Octane boosters worthless as mentioned.

I'd be a bit wary of injector cleaners. Seems that using good fuel will keep them clean until such time as they need to be refurbished. JMHO

Like Bubba said, GM makes differential additive, but i haven't heard of an oil additive. As far as most additives go, they are worthless, don't even bother with them. Octane boost is a fraud, and fuel injector cleaner shouldn't be needed if you use quality gasoline. As far as oil additives, today's oils are so refined and "supplemented" with special chemicals that anti-friction agents (additives) shouldn't be needed. I can't remember the name of the magazine, but it was a mustang mag (sorry I was bored ) . It wasn't any ol' publication, this was a hardcore racing mag I borrowed from a friend at work, and they dyno tested somthing called Accellerator (or something along those lines). I can't remember what it had in it, it was an octane booster but I think it also had small amounts of nitromethane. It was dyno proven to boost octane and provide extra horses. The article also went into other "Wal-Mart" additives, and basically classified each as junk.
