Observations on swapping in a 94 engine in a 93...
Well... this swap has been pretty challenging so far. Hopefully, I will be done this weekend to complete this post, but here's the "complications" I've had so far (some I knew of, some I didn't)
in case someone is considering this swap.
The 93 I have is an A4 with 3.23 gears, chip code BDZL.
The first problem which I was aware of, was the tranny torque converter control connector. I used a '94 6 Speed harness (thank you Speeds8erM-1
) and modified it to work for this purpose. I think using a 6 speed harness is best for this purpose due to the multitude of extra wires the A4 harness has.
I cut the reverse lockout, skip shift and VSS connectors and connected the '93 TCC 5 prong connector to the reverse lockout connector on the 6 speed harness. I used the reverse lockout connector for this purpose because the TCC control pin on the BLUE PCM connector is located in the same connector as the reverse lockout pin. So I just switched the pins in the BLUE connector.
Now, the other 3 wires of the 5 prong connector report current gear. I did not use those wires, but programmed the PCM to be in 3rd gear all the time (I used a 94 A4 program) for lack of a better way to let it know which speed is the tranny currently in. So provided the TCC signals are the same, this should allow the 94 PCM to control the lock/unlock of the torque converter.
I swapped the VSS connector from the A4 tranny to the 6 speed one. The wires are the same, so this will work, I'm sure.
The 94 harness (as well as the 95-97) also has a backup light connector, but 93 seems to have this wired directly to the shifter, so I just cut the connector.
Besides this, the 93 uses non heated 1 wire oxygen sensors, so I swapped the sensors from the 94 engine.
Now, the other problem I wasn't aware of, is the throttle body. I've seen in many posts that the 94-97 TB supposedly has a place to hook up the detent cable of the 700r4 tranny. This is wrong as mine does not and the 94 engine was an A4 too.
So I swapped the TB from the 93 engine, but then there's another problem I'm working on right now. The IAC valve has a different connector on the 93 than the one on the 94-97. (I knew about this)
I thought of just switching the valves but they are completely different and so I'm switching the entire bottom plate. (luckily, this fits without any problems)
I noticed that there is what looks like a bleeder screw on the bottom plate of the 93 TB. Hopefully this won't create any problems when bleeding the air out of the coolant. I suppose it shouldn't since otherwise there wouldn't be a TB bypass for the 93s.
Another problem I wasn't aware of, is the battery to alternator connector. This is different on the 93 and will not work with a 94-97 alternator. So I cut the 93 one and crimped a new connector.
I will add more this weekend, but this should be about it. Of course, you can always just use the 93 harness and forget about all these headaches, but then, what's the fun in that?
By the way, here's a picture of the progress as of tonight.

I know I am three months late on posting a reply but no, thank YOU for buying the harness.
I dont really come on the board anymore except for the For Sale section. I was doing a search to see what all my name had gotten twisted up into in the lounge and stuff and found this post. I cant belive I started parting the car out over three months ago!
I have a question for you, that might be better off in E-Mail but oh well, have you ever thought about doing some Mustang programming?
