Newly assembled motor w/Solid Roller

FINALLY got the motor put together. I took a flight to Houston from home (upstate New York), met with some of my old Houston Fbuds (Gawd these guys are great!) and, with wrenches in hand, assembled the long block. The cam is a used Cam Motions (242/252 .606/.606 108.9 LSA). These figures are the result of the CC Pro Mag 1.6 ratio 7/16" studs. I set the cold lash at .020 and started her up. Lovely mechanical song. It's been awhile since I've heard the symphony of 16 solid lifters chatting away. After breaking it in around Houston, I changed the oil/filter and drove her back to Upstate New York. She never missed a beat. I was able to get a freeway on ramp kill(another LT1 4th Gen Z28) in Nashville with the new motor. It has quite a bit of cam surge below 2,500 but if you step on it in 3rd (don't bother with 1st or 2nd, it just spins the street tires) it pulls nicely to about 3,500 and then gets serious and really starts breathing. With the 4.10s in back and the T56 in 6th gear, most of the long trip was at 74mph with the cruise control on, showing 2,100 or so on the factory tach. The car sounds strong, noisy (with the solid lifters) and doesn't like stumbling around in town at low RPM's. I think I'll keep this cam/valve train in through this summers racing (New Lebanon's track), then swap in a milder hydraulic roller (an old favorite, CC 224/236 is likely).
I'm going to take the car over to Albany to a chassis dyno and see what she'll pull. I'll post the results after that.

Why not just keep the SR in the car, why go through the work again?

The speed limit here in this area is predominately 30mph and this bucking, high spirited motor just doesn't like going less than 2,500rpm at steady throttle. My daughter is going to start driving before long and she wants to drive this car. I'm going to drop the level of the cam as well as use LT1 edit to limit the car to 65mph max and RPM to 0 thru 5,000.

(Her) That's mean Dad, just plain mean. On a side note, I let my 17 year old daughter take my car out before I switched insurance companys, (show car, for emission reasons) and everone in the neighborhood was calling my house to find out if I was dead or something. They couldn't believe I let her drive my baby.

Hahaha.. Yeah. I get mixed responses from my friends. All of my daughters ' friends think it's beyond cool but my new wife (not my daughters mom) doesn't think it's a good idea. I counter with the fact that my daughter has been around this car since I bought it new in Nov, '95. She's been to the track with me, watched me race hundreds of times. She's very aware of the capabilities of the car and respectful of the power it has. I've always believed it's better for a girl to have a powerful car in case some neer-do-wells want to chase her down on the freeways. Well, that and a Glock. Hehehe... Congrats on being a good father and trusting your true finest possesion, your daughter, with a fine car. My daughter has been instructed not to ever let anyone drive that car. Not for a 'little bit' or anything. Her boyfriend has been excited and told her he can't wait to drive it. He was INSTANTLY corrected. "No one drives that car but me. Hear it, understand it, live it. Never....". That's my girl! With the cold weather we're having now (13" of snow overnight and low 20's) the big cam doesn't like start up very much. Sounds like it's running on 3 or 4 cylinders until it has been running a minute or two. I'm really anxious to try it on the dyno and the track. It pulls really strongly.

curious what heads/intake you are using? who did the tuning for you? did you convert to obd 1 (this is assuming you are talking about your 96 car)?

sounds like a beast... should be some serious fun.

edit: nevermind, i did a search and found the info i was looking for. good luck with the new motor
