New opti only lasted overnight?
Man I'm sorry to here that, I know it's a pain in the a$$ to do all that work and then have to think about doing it again. If you read all the post on here I read alot of people get bad unit's , I read that one guy got 5 that were bad. I cant believe GM hasn't fix the problem. I'll keep in touch and let you know how mine goes. Did you do this on your 96 ?
Yes, it is on my 96. I'm just going to box it back up and send it back to summit and return it for anotherone.
Based on your two threads, it sounds like you're doing a lot of guessing...
So if I understand what your saying replacing a bad optispark could also cause other comonents it fail or be bad at the same time?
Yes i am. When the new opti was in it sat there and ran fine. And had a really snappy throttle. So when it would not start back up the next day, i tried 2 different icm's and coils and it was all the same, just would crank over. I've checked all of the fuses, plug wires and coil wire, and all of the connecters to the coil, opti, icm and every place else under the hood.
Ok, got the new opti in and still is doing the same thing. So i did this test http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#opti_test and found 0v at A&D. But there is plunty of spark. It has a new opti, icm ,and a coil. All of the connections are clean can't find any broken wires. Checked all the fuses and they are all good. But there is a unmarked relay in the fuse box under the hood that is located in slot G. I can hear the full pump prime. And now my drivers side window won't go down. My dad segested that the car has a security system on it, that armed itself and won't let the car start or let the window go down. But i don't have a key flob with a security button on it, and i don't see a security device back by the spare tire were one should be mounted. There is a security light in the insterment cluster and a little red light on the trim that goes around the gauges, neither one is on. I'm at a loss to what is wrong with this car????
So if you have spark, the next thing to check is fuel. The easiest way to see if it's not getting fuel is squirt some in the intake while someone cranks it over. If you show a fuel problem, then check pressure and if that's good, check for injector pulses.
Make certain the opti-spark vent harness is plugged into the vacuum port of the intake manifold. (see shoebox’s photo)
I have to admit I was out of cars (worked for GM for 8 years) for about 10 years now and the Opti setup intimidated me at first. My W/P went drove the car in the garage and then after replacing W/P would not start. I had been to the site and read up about W/P replacement and how alot of Opti's failed from bad W/P so I bought one for my car. Blah blah still wouldnt run bought coil etc and so on getting really frustrated. Finally went back to basics. Check for spark at Opti if you have spark chances are its not the Opti coil etc its fuel related or fouled plugs something like that. In my case no spark so I checked for spark at coil still no spark checked for power to coil no power used a test light to check all fuses found bad fuse in fuse box under hood changed and started the car. Got to tell you it was very frustrating and took me like 3 weeks all together working on it after work and waiting for parts etc. Oh yah forgot to mention bought used Opti then a new one LMAO. Just pointing out dont overthink the problem I am still kicking myself in the ***. BTW anyone want or need a used Opti?
