need help with water pump relay!!!

My water pump relay went out and i went to get a brand new one, put it in and i got smoke from the relay. I think i got one of the wires switched, can someone tell me where each wire goes?

The guy that had the car before me did the wiring so i have no idea on how it goes.

Thanks

Re: need help with water pump relay!!!

See what's confusing me, according to my wire strippers, it looks like 14AWG wire coming off the water pump pigtail.

CSI says to use no larger than 15A fuse, so that tells me the circuit doesn't pull more than 15A, so we'll use 15A for our rating.

According to this chart:
http://www.rbeelectronics.com/wtable.htm

For 10' of wire (I should be running less than that) it reccomends 18AWG wire. For over 10', then use 14AWG wire.

This chart:
http://www.amplepower.com/primer/gauge/
Says for 10' I need to use 12AWG. I won't be hurting anything if I just use 14AWG even though I'm only going to be running about 5' of wire will I?

I'm trying to use that calc at the bottom of the first link. If I use:
10', 15A, 14AWG = .6V drop 5%
5', 15A, 14AWG = .5V drop 4.2%

10', 15A, 16AWG = 1.5V drop, 12.5%
5', 15A, 16AWG = .7V drop, 5.8%

Now, I'm assuming this pump doesn't actually eat up 15A, it's gotta be less than that.

I guess I'll just run 14AWG and be done with it.
