When I bought the car, the guy said it misses at 4k rpms but under that, its fine. When I got it, all seemed as he said so I went to my friends house last night, a20 mile cruise on the highway, 6 miles through town and all was fine.

I park the car and spend the night (hey, she was ready to go, you know?) and I hop in the car in the afternoon, 4pm, and take off. I take the same trip back home. Once at home and off the highway, I putt aound town 3 miles and all was fine. I go into Advanced to get some oil, come out, go sit at the light 1000 feet away for 3-4 minutes, take of and no matter what I do with the gas pedal, it is pop pop pop pop pop....pop....pop.....pop pop....pop....pop......pop pop........pop......pop pop pop all the way down the road and back home. I barely had enough steady power, through the popping, to make it home 2 miles. Almost acted like the distributer timing was off ???????

I change the engine oil and tranny fluid, start her up and she is fine. I am sure it will do it again when it get hot.

Strange thing is, that it was fine going out to my destination last night in the rain??? Was it was the fact that it was cool and something is over heating? It sounds like it, like maybe the electronic thingy behind the coil is getting hot? I think I also read that it could be the fuel pump, but, only when hot? Either way, I am checking the fuel pump tomarrow during the day to rule that out, maybe it gets hot and fails?

I have checked the search engine and did not see anything that described what my car is doing. I am sure the answer lies in a post somewhere not found by me, but, if someone has some ideas off the top of thier head, please let me know. In the meantime, I am going back for more searching, thanks.

 

Well, I did some searching and I have not found anything definitive for my problem. Possobilities include, but are not limited to,

Optispark (god I hoe thats not it cause it is expeeeeensive and the car is just a beater, gee, do I replace????)

crossed wires

bad control module

sounds kinda like the opti.. mine only acted up when the car was warm.. and the opti is what controls your timing.. but mine only did it under throttle it was ok at cruisin speeds..

 

I have a ignition module(80$new) with 30k on it ill sell for 50$ shipped. I had a brand new one when I bought the car so I just put it in. This one works PERFECT. Let me know-Mark

 

Thanks, i will keep that in mind for right now, but, with 190k on her, I am going in for a timing chain swap and might as well do the opti wile I am there. If it still acts up, I will get back to you.

Anyhoo, when I was driving it all around in the rain the first trip I ever took it on, it drove fine for 30 minutes, at least. Maybe the water and air temps was keeping something cool? There is no backed up confirmation on this so that is pure speculation as I have not been able to duplicate the "rain drive" to date.

 

Yesterdays update: I was in traffic and when I got home 25/30 minutes later, she started acting up as useual. I plucked the MAP and MAF connectors off, individually, gave her a little gas and still the same results. I did not shut off the engine when I unplugged them, so, I do not know if that would have made a diffferance or not. Anyone else?
