Post Changing plugs and wires = battery melting along with pos and neg cables WTF??

AS it says i'm so fumed i cant begin to talk except i was gled no fire was started or anyone was hurt. I was changing plugs and wires. This process took me about 3 hours. When i started i dissconnected the neg cable on the battery.

I'm all done i begin to put cable on and i got it started nothing happing, when i'm about half way on somthing in pass eng comparment started sparking and i began loosing asap well i didnt make it the negtive terman malted off the battery. Both wires are toasted.

WTF

before i end there are 2 varibles that are different, 1st the oil dipstick was loose i moved it slightly to get in and i did not tightin it fully, secondly there was a socket that droped in the eng comp, i was attenpting to back it out to find it in the daylight.

So what you all think and any rough estimate how much it is to fix ?

DO YOU THINK THE PCM OR ANY VITLES WERE BRUNT DURING THIS THE CAR WAS IN THE OFF POSITION WHEN I RECONNECTED THE BATTRTY NOTHING CAME ON.
DONE VENTING

I'd bet that the socket that you dropped didn't fall all the way to the floor but instead landed on top of the battery lead on top of the starter. When you went to hook things back up..direct short.
Jack her up and pull the starter. I'll bet the socket is right there. Probably welded to the cable.
Should be a case of just changing out the burnt wires and battery.

good luck,

exactly what I was thinking. no other possibilities really. replace pos. and neg. batt. cables, posts, and batt. and you'll prolly be all set.

other poss.s of things gone wrong are burned fuses and fusible links at starter. give each wire a tug (lightly) to see if the fusible links are good at the starter.

Take it to the dealer,it is still under warranty?
Tell them you went to start it,and it started to smoke.
How are they going to know what happened.

Al, my fellow Formula freind, you hit the nail right on the head. Upon further investigation, the culprit, a socket wrench, lay on top of the starter. I couldnt tell you exactly how/what happened because i wasnt there during the maylay, but I got a shocking voice mail while i was out of town at the time "ooooooooooooooooooo SHIIIIIIIIITTTT!!!!"

as quasar said it was the ratchet that caused this.

The car is at the shop awaiting a list of things to be done, final danage report is

new bettery, neg and pos cable and handful of fuses.
