Is it necessary to use distilled water in the cooling system?
Re: Is it necessary to use distilled water in the cooling system?
Distilled does not corrode as fast, it does not have the impurities as tap does...
We use Distilled water in our Karts, the engines alone cost more than some cars on this site.... and we flush the systems continually...
Do you need that in your car? I highly doubt it, unless your going to be flushing it once a year or more frequently... I dont see a problem sticking with tap.

Ever see the white corrosion form in a coolant system? That won't happen using distilled water. Unless you cut it with battery acid. LT1's have enough cooling problems don't you think?

I know people that swear by distilled in the cooling systems, but I've only started recently. And the only reason I did is that I don't like the water quality where I live now. So it probably depends on if your ground water is hard or soft to start with. The harder the water, the greater the need for distilled. Also- if it's a project that will get the coolant changed regularly due to repairs or maintenance, then tap is probably fine. But if the coolant is in there for 5 years at a time, then it's worth the distilled. Good Luck!
