my impressions of the 227/233

well i finally got all the bugs worked out and can now give my personal opinion of the comp 227/233.
First i will start with the mods.
slp headers
custom 3 inch exhaust w/ hooker aero muff
227/233
1.6 nsa rockers
2800 stall
transgo shift kit
slp cai
3.42's

Keep in my this is all on a 94z vert with 9000 miles(car is basically still new)

I can honestly say I am not impressed with the cam. It has no low end grunt. I don't think I could burn the tires off from idle. Top end it screams. I had a 94z hard top that had the same mods but a hot cam and the hot cam car would smoke this one. That one used to trap 110 with stock heads. I don't know if the vert will even hit 108. I wish I would have chosen another cam. This car is a street car, not a track car. Don't want a roll bar. I should have gotten a cam with more low end, not a high rpm screamer. The hot cam car was a lot more fun to play around with on the street. I guess I will have to run this thing and really see what it can do. On a side note. My friend bought my old car and we are going on vacation together this month and it will be 4 hours on the highway(going to the st ignace michigan car show)
So I am pretty sure we will run the cars. Then I will have some proof that my car sucks.

I'm not sure your car sucks, but it's obvious you're disappointed with it. What were your expectations? That cam is a mid to top end cam - that's the sacrifice you make (low end torque) when you go larger. Are the heads stock? Tuning?

lol, I wish I went with that cam instead of the 224/230. I cann't get any traction now so I will glady give up more low end.

I am sorry to hear that that combo did not work out to your expectations. However, it is refreshing to hear an honest apprasial of a certain combo. All too often all we hear is "my cam (insert: headers, exhaust, tires, clutch, etc) is the best!"

Brandon, hats off to you for an honest post. There seem to be so many guys that simply have their ego too much connected to their mods that it is hard for them to provide a frank and objective opinion. I would prefer to hear a straight personal story, even if it may not be a majority opinion. I've made mistakes on mods and am not afraid to admit it especially if it helps others (that share the same performance objectives) avoid making the same mistake.

Keep us posted on that trip and camparo you mentioned.

Consider rechecking all of your connections. MY personal experience with the 233/239 is that it's a top end screamer, but still had a LOT more low end then stock. When I had it running on 7 cylinders (bad wire arc), it had no low end, but screamed on top. I'd double check the ignition system.

thanks for the replies guys. The car is running madwolf tuning. I think it is tuned really well. The car also has stock untouched heads.
When I started on this car I was really just trying to make it all around better than my last Z. I honestly don't think I succeeded. I definately will check all of my connections.
Thanks
Brandon

It's really nice that you provided your honest opinion of the
setup and cam. What great feedback to have. Thank you.

Since that cam is going to want to run in the upper rpm ranges
you should consider going to 3.73s or maybe a tad more.

with the 2800 stall and that cam you should have good low end torque (better than stock)
it should SMOKE the tires with that combo from idle....
something done sound right...

Ya I think I really should have went with 3.73's. I just got my car back last friday after getting the 3.42's. I put slp shorties on like 2 weeks ago, maybe a wire is smoked. I believe #8 was really close. I really hope there is more in this thing. There should be no reason this shouldn't smoke them from idle. I guess traction won't be an issue.

I think its the stock heads man.

I have the xe224/230 and it has *** for low end...from idle in 1st if i punch it, it wont break the tires loose...with the stock cam i could break them loose in 1st and 2nd.

But it runs really well up top, it was custom tuned so i know its running right.

this summer im going to go with a custom cam and lloyd elliot heads.

I have a setup very close to yours and I have no low end either. It screams on the top but lags on the bottom. I barely spin out of the hole and then it lags with every shift (because of the 3.42's). I had p/p heads and I raced a guy on stock heads/manifolds with a hotcam the other night and barely pulled a car length on him. His car is a 97 M6, hotcam, 4.10 gears, cutout and CAI.
I am going to get a dyno tune and see what the problem is, I should have pulled him bad even though I do have way to high a rear gear for my combo (3.42's).

i went with hooker lt's, 3 inch true duals, XE 230/236, 1.6 rr's and It seemed alot tougher then stock even down low... 1st and half of 2nd was tire smoke and I got Dr's...

I still dont have all the bugs worked out it wont go into closed loop. and its having a injector code and the left bank o2 wont swing
