is this oil just as good for other cars ( like mustangs , ls1 and other v8s) or is it specificaly good for lt1s only?

I've seen oil analysis reports with this oil in a number of different engines now and it's worked well in all of them. I'm currently running this oil in my Corvette and in my wife's 2000 Civic, plus my mom and dad are running it in their cars too (mom has a 2001 Golf, dad has a 2004 Volvo XC70) In every engine I've personally put it in, and done oil analysis on, the wear numbers with this oil are significantly better. And the oils it has bettered have been Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Maxlife, for instance.

By the way Brent, what was the name of the additive your father tried?

Re: My 6200 mile oil analysis results with German Castrol 0w30

Can someone post the SKU or barcode number from either a case or a bottle of the German Castrol 0w-30? The autozone local to me doesn't carry it, but they said that they might be able to get their hands on it if I got the barcode number.

Thanks,
Chris

Patman,

Have you done any analysis on LT1's built with larger bearing clearances?
What kind of oil do you recommend for them?

I'm going to get this done on my dodge 4x4 too

When you've got larger clearances you usually want a thicker oil too but it also depends on what kind of oil temps you will see also.

For any kind of custom engine I highly recommend you do an oil analysis program in order to help you choose the right oil. It's best to work in conjunction with someone who has experience in this area. On that note, I recommend a guy named Terry Dyson. I get him to interpret my reports for me and he can pinpoint exactly what you need to run in order to get long engine life. Here is his contact info:

So where is the magnesium comming from? Do you have magnesium valve covers that have rockers rubbing against them?

Magnesium isn't coming from the engine, it's an additive which comes in the oil to begin with, it's used as a detergent. Some oils use a lot of it while others use very little, which is why you'll see higher levels in some reports compared to others. In the case of Castrol 0w30, it comes with about 130ppm of magnesium to begin with.

A gimmick... something that is too good to be true. I've always viewed "snake oil" as a term used to describe flea-market type products that make huge claims but usually don't work. Like the magical doohickey you stick on your spark plug that gives you 10 miles per gallon more or the magnet you clamp on your fuel line that is supposed to give you like a 15% increase in mileage, or in this case, an oil additive that is supposed to reduce wear so much and do so good that you can run your car with no oil once the engine has been "treated"

Well, just went to go to the website to paste it here but it no longer exists...

It was here...
http://www.ixldave.com/

After a little hunting I found this...

http://www.lubricationproducts.com/ixl.htm

That's the same bottle so they must have just changed their site URL.

Sure sounds good on the site and they had a few pretty convincing demonstrations with this stuff when my dad saw it... but, doesn't appear to have done anything

Hey Patman, what about mixing different weights together do get something in the middle?

I was running M1 50wt and decided it was a little too thick so I started mixing in a couple quarts of 30wt with each oil changeto bring it down to like 43wt. Does this work as I expected?

Not exactly, because those different viscosities will use different levels of viscosity index improvers, so the mixing of the two doesn't exactly give an exact average.

You're better off just going with Mobil 1 0w40 if you wanted to get something thicker than their 5w30 but thinner than their 15w50.

Mixing of the two won't hurt however, but the problem I have with mixing any 15w50 in is the fact that it'll create a thicker oil on startup. Where if you chose the 0w40, you'd get the best of both worlds, an oil with a good flow on startup, but will also protect better when the engine is warm (compared to the 5w30 & 10w30 that is)

Re: My 6200 mile oil analysis results with German Castrol 0w30

I have 89k on my LT1. I'm doing an oil change this weekend. I'm currently running M1 SYN 10W-30, should I switch to M1 0W-40?

DOES ANYONE NEED CASTROL SYNTEC 0w30???

I work at Autozone and we carry it. I made sure it was made in Germany. If anyone needs it and doesn't mind paying shipping it is $5.39 per quart including tax plus shipping. I would give you guys my discount, but I don't get a discount on oil. Let me know if anyone needs it.

For those in Canada, Crappy tire (aka Canadian Tire) also sells it, 6.25 a qt.
