Question MSD-6AL, worth the upgrade?

I can get a 6AL for $230+ (tax included) and I was wondering is this thing worth the money? I know on older vehicles these MSD boxes can make a difference but how about on a 1995 Z28?

Thanks

Thats a good question. I'd like to know also. I know from experience that they do work very well on an older carb setup.

Well mine was there when I bought the car, but I do like how it fires up on the first crank. I believe it also adds HP someone told me 15 or so, not sure though.

I installed mine when I added nitrous and wanted the better spark. I noticed easier starts and smoother idle after install. I question the HP gains if any. If I did it again I think I would get the Digital 6 instaed of the 6AL. It has more capabilities and is pretty close in price.

Re: MSD-6AL, worth the upgrade?

I remember in a past issue of GMHTP, ('Let there be light' i believe was the title)they installed a 6AL into an LT1 camaro. If i remember correctly, they noticed very minimal HP and torque gains (under 3 or so if i remember) but did notice a smoother idle and i believe a slightly crisper throttle response.

In my opinion, on a stock to slightly modified car, money is probably better spent somewhere else.

Waste of $$$ on a stock or nearly stock motor.

After the cam and heads were done on my car it would not shift above 6,000 RPMs. Put in a MSD-6AL and the car ran great!

Re: MSD-6AL, worth the upgrade?

Right now I'm looking to get the car repainted so right now I have a few bolts ons on the car. Things like CAI, catback exhaust, and headers are on the way. Long term goal is that I do plan on running nitrous after I finish my bolt ons so that is why I was thinking of about getting a control box now.

I now have a different question sort of. How does the brand Mallory compare to MSD? I have heard great things about both but it seems through Mallory you get a little more bang for your buck. This is the Mallory unit I'm currently looking at.
