Mass air flow problem???

I'm at a total loss here. I have a 1996 z28 all stock with a freshly rebuilt engine. My problem is that when I plug in my mass air flow sensor and try to start it, it dies right away unless I give it gas and rev it to 2k or higher. Anything lower it dies. The thing is though my mass air flow sensor is brand new and so is my connector to it. Is it common for a sensor like that to be bad? It also seems that when I rev it up to 5k while driving it doesn't want to shift and it just kind of bounces from 4k to 5k almost like hitting a rev limiter. Is my mass air flow sensor causing thins or do I have more problems?
Oh and my ses code is for the maf sensor.

Thanks for any help!

Is your MAF a new stock one or aftermarket?

p0100 and p0102 are the only codes that show up. I assuming the problem is going to be in the wirring? Thanks for the help.

P0100 (static frequency reading) usually sets when 1) the MAF sensor is dead; OR 2) the wiring harness does not have 12V on the pink wire. Key on, check for 12V between the pink wire and the black/white ground wire in the MAF sensor harness connector.

P0102 (low frequency) sets when the flow signal from the MAF is less than 1,000Hz. That would be an irrationally low reading (idle flow will produce a signal in excess of 2,000Hz). Sounds like a deceased sensor.

Ok thanks for the help. Im pretty sure that the p0100 code is because i do not have the sensor connected. I seems odd that the new sensor is bad, but I wouldn't doupt it.

Just a heads up, my second job here in Gulfport is at Autozone, and those MAFs have an awfully short turn around time. I have sold them and accepted the returns on the same sensors within 2 weeks.

Buy an AC DELCO or aftermarket sensor, cant argue with OEM quality.

OK ive went through two more sensors and all the same problem. Wont start with the MAF plugged in. Im a little on the edge about spending another 150 or more for an OEM sensor. I'm worried about the p0102 code. What causes this. This code comes on after the sensor is plugged in. Thanks for the help.

Did you check the intake elbow for a large hole?
