MAF Causing Problems?!?!

Well I think I have narrowed down my problems with the car dieing at idle and having a part throttle stumble to the MAF, but I think it may be a combonation of things related to the MAF.

I hooked up my brothers Granatelli MAF to my car tonight and it drove and idled fine for over 30 minutes. This was without my MAF Translator.

Hooked up the MAF Translator and the car dies in about 30 seconds...Must be the MAF Translator, found the problem!!! ...or not!

I hooked up the stock MAF without the MAF Translator and the car idled fine, but the part throttle stumble was back. I parked the car for about 10 minutes while it idled in the driveway. For some reason I decided to touch the connector going into the MAF and as soon as I touch it the car dies!

So it looks like the connector going into the MAF is bad, the stock MAF may be bad, and the MAF translator may or may not be bad.

So I plan to splice in a new MAF connector, get a new or used stock MAF and see how it goes.

Sound like a good plan?

I have no experience with the MAF Translator...Do you need it? If it ran fine with the Granatelli......I guess I'm just not sure what the translator does...Can you get a custom tune done and ditch the translator? I just don't hear of many people using them...But it definitely couldn't hurt to find another stock MAF to try...

Re: MAF Causing Problems?!?!

I use the MAF Translator to enrich the A/F mixture when I spray the car. If it is one of my problems I will get a new one because I really feel like it is an added safetly device...especially when i run a 150 shot.

I am going to try the connector 1st, then maybe a new MAF if that doesn't work. Once I feel like I have the problem resolved without the Translator I guess I will try to throw it back on the car and see if the problem arises again.

I wonder if Ramchargers would of through the MAF Translator for me to see if it is ok.

Re: MAF Causing Problems?!?!

There was a guy running like 11 seconds in an Impala heads/cam/spray, swore by the Translator, till he was eventually convinced to try pcmforless.com programming AND DROPPED 3 TENTHS. With programming that cost under $100. In other vehicled where the pcm is not so easily accessed a Translator might be worth using but not on these cars. Give the pcm accurarte info and if you think it needs to do something else with that info program it to do what it neees to instead of screwing with the sensor info to it.
I would just fix the wiring before messing with another MAF, fix one thing at a time otherwise you wont know what the problem was once it is gone. Just last weekend we found a broken MAF wire on a friend's newly purchased car it is not that uncommon a problem.
