Unless you have some good power mods and TRACTION, goinf to 4:10 is not recommended. The SOTP feel, is just the lunge the car does when shifting, you are not actually going faster.

Trust me on a basically stock car, the Lt1 runs out of breath quickly by the time you hit 4th. You need to make more power at higher rpms.

Going through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gear are too short for the relatibely short powerband peak of 5000rpm on a stock Lt1. And unless you hook, you will not be faster, but slower.

Hope this helps.

We went from 4.10 to 3.73 on my brother 96Z. He has CAI, Hooker Lt's, Offroad Pipes/No Mufflers on a True Dual Exhaust, All the Ignition Stuff, BBK Pullies, and a Hot CAm Kit.

I went from 4.10's to 3.73. They were fun but when the car was stock, it would run out of steem at the top of fourth. I also lost a tenth at the track from the swicth but gained 2mph

Seems to me that stepping into 4:10 gears from 3:42s, stock LT1 and full boltons and incresing your tire size to an MTET 26 x 11.5 x 15 which is a 26.3 OD vs a stock BFG P245/50/16 which is a 25.7 OD would help with the running out of 4th gear problem due to the obvious physics change here. I realize going to big a dia like an ET 28" with a wide tread width would definitely trash the GM10 but a 26.3 OD increase I do not think would hurt and the tread width only increases by roughly 2". I'm doing 4:10's next Sat and this was my plan was going to WELD Draglites with a little bit of rear tire diameter increase to give me a little more in 4th gear. The cam/heads down the road should make up for the rest. I've also heard mixed stories on here and elsewhere on 4:10 gears vs 3:42s. Most I heard said don't bother with 3:73's not much different than 3:42s and again most said the 4:10's were a gain of about 3/10ths at the track. Open for suggestions if anyone thinks I'm making a mistake.

You sound like you did your research. On the highway, I rev only 2300 RPM at 80 MPH instead of 2000. I'm not changing them any day soon.

i went with richmonds and im more than happy. the only thing about them is that they howl just a tad more, but thats only because they have changed the pitch of the teeth on the ring and pinion gears to make them stronger.

4.10's here and love em. One thing I dont understand with some of the post on here is the 6th gear talk. Seems like nobody uses 6th gear untill they get 4.10's?? With my stock 3.42's I used 6th daily, if I was at 60mph. and not going up a hill, I could use 6th with just a few bolt ons. I could cruise in 6th with the stock 3.42's at 60mph and be at 12-1300 rpms. Sure, you have no "pulling" power at that low of an rpm but that is what 6th is for, good gas milage right? With my 4.10's I'm at prob. 2k while going bout 60mph. or so. I usually only race in the 1/8, and I'm in 4th gear at around 6200-ish at the finish line, perfect Thats while spraying a 150 shot though I'd say go with 3.73's if you plan on using a power adder and race the 1/4. If u are gonna be on the street for the most part, then u will love the 4.10's. JMO.....later, Chris
