m6 guys that switch from 3.42 to 4.10 only
As the subject states, just wanted your input on your swap. Does the likes out weight the dislikes etc. I have read scattered opinions on different post but would like to narrow this down to m6 guys. I have bought a Eaton carrier and havent decided on gears yet but i am leaning towards the 4.10s I dont do alot of highway driving and besides MPG is not a concern. I have a 67 chevy truch that gets 10MPG. Thanks in advance.
In my old '97 Z M6 I went with the 4.10's. I had all the standard bolt ons. However I found out later that I didn't make enough power to use 3 rd and 4th gear. My brother had an identicle '96 Z M6 (same bolt ons) and the stock 3.42's. I would jump him by 2-3 cars off the line but by the top of 4th we were even. I would go with 3.73's unless u plan on making alot of power someday.

i went from 3.42 to 4.10 and i love it. It is such a noticeable change. The only thing is like he said they play out at the top of fourth and you dont want to race in fifth. But i just make sure that all the races i get in are from 2nd gear punches and people get
. i would definatley go with them and its not like they are not driveable on the highway buy any means. I can finally use 6th!! At 80 mph it is at like 2300 instead of 2000, big deal i say, its more than worth it.

geez you guys race until you top out 4th gear on the street! isn't that a little dangerous. The 4.10s might make you go into overdrive at the track, although I have heard people say they have enough gear left to not, and with a larger cam you would have no problem. I am planning on 4.10s right after christmas, the 3.73 are not much of a difference from the 342s. If your gonna spray or supercharge then stick with 3.73, otherwise go with the bigger gears. If my memory is right the overall gear ratio for the street should be between 7.0- 8.0, so the 4.10s sound right
Love the 4.10s,I used to trap at 112 at 6500 in 3rd with the 3.42[and my mods],since 4.10s trap at 112 in 4th at 5800.
Plan on going A4 but will keep 4.10s just for the LAUNCH it should give me.Would like to do this=

4.10's all the way
Especially if you don't care too much about mpg. I was a little concerned with mpg beforehand but now I don't even complain. It also has turned out to be a compliment since my cam install.

4:10's are a good choice, for a M6 stock or not. When I bought the the gears the car was stock. It was a little rough, and blew the stock clutch, but with a new clutch, and more mods, they began to fit right into the picture
Also you will learn to love 6th gear.
I cruised at 2,000 rpm @ 70mph

4.10s! I've done many of the bolt-ons and I'm going into the motor (Cali NEW smog laws permitting). At 80, I'm at 2400 RPM. First is a granny gear to warm the tires. I'd recommend the 4.10s, the fun factor of 15-20 less miles per tank is worth the extra $1.75 at the pump.
I lost about 1.5 MPG, but I don't think it is due to the higher RPMs, still cruising at 2000-2400 RPM on the FWY, it's due to the right foot and fun launches!
www.chrismans.com hooked me up with the Eaton unit too! So far it's been a great match. 4.10s tend to howl a little bit, but if you open up your exhaust, you won't even mind.

I went from 3:42's tp 4:10's this summer and I thought it was a huge SOTP gain, it felt like a different car
Like everyone said it's especially noticable in 1-2 gears, it pulls way harder off the line with the 4:10's now. I didn't notice any difference in MPG, although I really never paid attention to it anyway. It made the car a lot easier and more consistent for me to launch, I used to get 2.0 - 2.1 60's, now I am almost always in the 1.9's. The car does almost run out of gear in 4th though in the 1/4, it just makes it at around 6K. I'm working on fixing that though with the Hotcam kit going in this month

Thanks for the response, real good info here. I have a few days to make a decision. From previous post, i hear most of you guys favor motive vs richmond and a few positive strange gear comments as well. I think i am leaning towards the motives. again thanks: bow:

stay away from richmond, motive is great, and dont hesitate on paying more for the heat treated ones, they are more durable, thats the way i went and im doing fine!
