Talking AS&M vs. Holley throttle bodies...

Is there really any big gains using the AS&M throttle body over the Holley?? I have been lookin around, and most holleys go for 300 new, and the AS&M are at least 200 bucks more! So, anyone had experience with either, and can recommend which they would buy if they had to do it all over again?? I mean, if the holley is cheaper, but you will have nothing but problems with it, then I would rather flip the extra coin for the AS&M TB, ya know? But I haven't heard anyone complain about the 58mm holley...

So let me know!

Also, does the IAC holes in the front matter? The AS&M has one big one, the holley has two little ones...

Thanks
Cody

Re: AS&M vs. Holley throttle bodies...

It doesn't have anything to do with "performance" in the sense of HP. Its an issue of the quality of construction. My Holley 58mm had huge gaps around the throttle blades, and the metal lever that is used for the throttle stop would move around in the cable quadrent, causing variations in closed and open throttle TPS voltages. Others have had problems with the spring pressure required to fully close the blades.

I had to rework the blades to reduce the anulus between the blades and the body, and pin the lever to the quadrent. Somehow, you shouldn't have to to that on a $350 item. There's an Accel/LPE TB that's supposed to be the best, but its even more expensive than the AS&M.

well I checked out the accel one on LPE's web site. Damn, 600 bucks for a throttle body?? ouch. So is the AS&M one a high quality peice, or will I have to work on that thing too like the bbk or holley?

Re: AS&M vs. Holley throttle bodies...

i just put my 58mm holley on my car monday ( after hand polishing it for bout an hour ) had no problems at all . I like that Holley directs all of the air from the IAC straight into the idle air passage in the intake manifold. ( i'm not sure if as&m does this too but i know BBK doesn;t) throttle doesn't stick , no problems for me just bolted on. OH i got mine from tbyrne for 299 but since i order online they gave me 30 off so i got it shipped to my door for 28X. Boy does it look good polished too

Gotta agree with Fred the AS&M TB's are the best ones out there.

Maybe you and others bought these when they first started making them and they had problems? My throttle blades have no gaps around them, the throttle stop lever is tight, and spring pressure feels normal and closes the blades with little effort. It seems like a VERY high quality part. I am very, very impressed with it

PS, I know where you can get them for $350 shipped

I'm guessing it's more of a quality control issue, where some are good and some aren't.
