AS&M Header install

Hey i just got a set of AS&M headers, and pipes used to convert my 97 exhaust to a single cat exhaust, but i still need gaskets and bolts, i was thinking about the stage 8 bolts... and i have no idea which gaskets... is there anything else i am missing? i hear some things about new dip stick tube, and i have to adapt my EGR fittings... is this true?

Use felpro gaskets. You can seal them with copper RTV as well for added protection. I had problems with copper gaskets so I'd steer clear of them. I don't see why you would need a new dipstick tube for the headers? Your EGR only has one fitting to the exhaust manifold and its only held on by one bolt/nut/screw.

Re: AS&M Header install

Felpro has worked well on my headers and collectors. I'd stick with those 1406 is the model I think (D port)

Sometimes the stock dipsticks wont fit in correctly after a header install, I know mine wouldnt, you have basically 3 choices. Lokar/Mildon/ or Modify the stocker to fit. The first two cost from $40-$50.

I used breslin header bolts. Not a one has backed out at all. I'd give them a try, I have heard from AS&M users that sometimes you cant get the clips on them all.

EGR fittings I am not sure why you would need to adapt them...perhaps get rid of it all together like I did.

Re: AS&M Header install

I use the Mr. Gasket header gaskets with my AS&M headers and haven't had any leaks. You don't have to do much to the stock dip stick tube to get it to fit

Re: AS&M Header install

I never used "grease" or sealant on my header install. Only for the EGR block-off plates which didnt have gaskets. No leaks yet.

Re: AS&M Header install

You don't need to "adapt" the EGR connection. You need to "adapt" the AIR connections. The single-cat AS&M's have the larger 7/8" diameter threads on the AIR connections. The dual-cat AIR fittings (96/97) are smaller than that.

I've had good luck with the Mr. Gasket copper gaskets and ARP 12-point bolts.... 4 years and no problems with either.

My dipstick tube would not fit back in the stock location with the AS&M's. It need a "re-alignment"
