Installing aftermarket pan/pump, any advice (do I have to pull the motor?)

I just got the new motor in and it looks like I am running into a cavataion/drainback issue. I know it looks like I will have to pull the motor, but I really dont want to do that. Is there anyway to like drop the K- memeber down a little with a hoist holding the motor with the car on a twin post lift and then get the pan on there?

Any advice on the easiest way to get the pump on when you have a twin post and a engine hoist.

Also, whats the best aftermarket setup that is economical?

most people like the canton sumped tanks and the melling high volume from what I have seen. It is possible to get the pan off without pulling the motor. I had a lt1 on a drive on lift with a tall stand under the front of the motor and lowered the lift to push the motor up, that gave me enough room to get the pan off, it wasn't fun though, good luck

We tried to pull the pan on a friend's car and it wasn't possible. Both motor mounts were disconnected and the engine and tranny were jacked up, but we ran out of room cause the tranny was hitting on the firewall/tunnel.

How about with a th350?

I think they might inhibit room in the tunnel.

with a 350 I am not sure, I did one with a 4l60. I would say give it a shot, you won't lose much time trying to get it out. I know when I did it it took me about 1.5 hours to get the pan out, alot better then pulling the motor

Do it the opposite way.

1. Put a piece of square tubing across the top shock towers.
2. Use 2 ratchet binder straps around the front header tubes to the tubing.
3. Loosen motor mounts & then ratchet the motor up slightly.
4. Disconnect the steering rack from the column & the brake lines at the ABS.
5. Disconnect the x-member bolts & drop it down, letting it hang off the control arms. The motor will stay in position & the crossmember can be pulled down to allow pan removal.

Good luck.

Thats a awsome method. I can picture it in my head and it doesnt seem that bad. One question, I should leave the shock mounts attached and just let it hang from the spring/coil assembly?

Will there be enough room to get a aftermarket pan in there?

Yes, just leave suspension connected. It will hold everything up.

If you need more room, you can disconnect the lower ball joints & remove brake calipers/hoses to drop the x-member.
