lt1 problems

I have a 96 camaro lt1 six speed 128000. When I bought the car on the way home the fuel pump went out I fixed it but now it seems to run rough lots of black smoke and when u try to crude at a set speed it jumps all over. There is also a funny tapping sound now coming from the motor on the driver side. It sounded good when I got it now I'm lost. I pulled the codes number 5 cyl missing other than that not much. Also it sat for two years. Any help would be great . Thank you

Did you drain the old fuel already?

Re: lt1 problems

Black smoke is fuel so I'd guess it's running rich. I'd say o2 sensors but they should throw a code.

Have you checked the plugs to see how fouled they are?

I checked plug five it looked ok I mean it isn't hurting for new plugs and I checked the wires at night all look good and when I bought it there wasn't enough gas in it to make it to the station so its got good gas I filled it up with 91 and cleaners

Re: lt1 problems

If it was running extremley rich, could have diluted the oil with fuel. Might want to check the oil, in case its thinned out and causing the tapping.

Ok I had the codes pulled again now it says left bank running lean but it smokes sitting still. Rapid engine missfire. And low maf voltage. I had the oil changed a few days ago but now its so thin it runs down the stick. If I unplug the maf its hard to start but it runs the se.

Re: lt1 problems

Which code is it? Try switching the O2 sensors and see if the code follows the sensor or stays at that bank

Re: lt1 problems

Sounds like you have a "false" lean condition. The O2 sensor tells the PCM the engine is running lean, when it isn't. The PCM richens it up by adding fuel the engine doesn't need. Now its running pig rich, fouling the plugs and washing down the cylinder walls, and diluting the oil. A false lean can be caused by misfires, an exhaust leak before the O2 sensor, or a faulty O2 sensor or wiring.

Do not drive it if its running that rich. Check for exhaust leaks on the driver's side (left bank), check for misfires, and check the condition of the O2 sensor and the wiring.

There is no code for "low voltage" on the MAF sensor. There are codes for "system static" (P0100, often caused by loss of power to the MAF sensor), "system rationality" (P0101), "low frequency" (P0102) and "high frequency" (P0103). You need to find out which code you actually have.

Re: lt1 problems

I'll have the codes repulled and try swiching the o2 sensors. I guess I should check all the plugs to. The thined out oil might cause that tapping sound right? The guy that pulled the codes said it had a egr problem also, I guess ill just cap it off. Thanks for the help it makes it eayser.

Re: lt1 problems

I tried to pull the o2 sensor all I managed to do was cut the wires, I guess it takes a special tool. no worries though it runs great all cleared up. I'm gonna have exhaust work done ill have them replace it. Any one no where I could get some interor parts? Thanks for the help who knew that a sensor could cause so much trouble.

Re: lt1 problems

Ok it runs great but there is a constant tap comming from the motor only when I'm in the gas, mostly from 2k and up its not there when its cold just after it warms up I've listened to it with a long screw driver you know one end on the motor the other on your ear. All sounds normal its making me crasy.
