lt1 motor
You only need the Opti if you are trying to keep the sequential fuel injection and use a stock PCM to drive the ignition. Otherwise, you put a conventional idstributor on it. Assuming its for transplant to another body. If its going into a 4th Gen F-body, the stock PCM needs to be retained for the fuel pump and the VSS/speedometer system. And the stock PCM needs the Opti signal to function.
Might want to clarify how the engine will be used.

I carbed an LT1 recently
threw away the opti (that felt good)
used the block off plate where opti was, threw in a regular HEI distributor. The fuel pump can easily be turned on by finding the right wire on the PCM or just splice into the fuel pump relay under the dash. And the computer will still work without the opti. I kept the PCM only for the speedometer. works great.

for now im keeping the fuel injection, since i have all the parts and such... but i was thinking of doing the same in the near future... go carbed and toss the opti... but i have the 96 pcm... so what pcm would i have to get to go carbed.. and wouldnt there be a problem with the harness some where? -- just curious .. ill probably stay fuel injected until i get into my 383 or 396 project in the next couple years
