LT1 Cooling issues

LT1 Cooling issues

Well, I was out with some friends one night.....drinking, and I/we ended up in my '94 Z28.....in his pasture.........doing donuts.

let's just say that I was doing for a while and the car got hot.....'bout 260 and started boilng the coolant out from the overflow tank.

So, I let it sit overnight, topped it off with coolant, and cranked it. Within several minutes, like 1, it was getting hot again.

1st thought....T-stat....not sure how much they cost every where else, but I happened to be in Shiner, Tx, ever heard of it....did not think so, and they only have one parts house, Kens Kar Parts, and the thermo was $20.

I replaced the T-stat, topped it off again, and once again it got hot almost instantly.

2nd thought....water pump...whew...small town....Kens Kar Parts actually had one.................for $200. Figured that I would do some more checking first, so i removed the t-stat housing and filled the pump with water and have a buddy crank the car to see if the pump would suck the water down through the pump, and it did just like it should.

So final destination....Kloesel's Garage....Shiner Tx, open till noon on saturday.....Mech told me that it sounded like air in system, and he let me use a kit to pull a vacuum on my cooling system.

Got home, drain radiator, pulled vacuum.....pretty neat, collapsed all hoses, once vacuum was to about 25 inches of mercury, closed the valve and let sit to see if it would hold vacuum..it did, no leaks. So, used vacuum to suck coolant into system till full and/ or out of vacuum..........cranked car, never had a problem. I did not even have to add coolant once the stat opened.


So, remember this if you ever have to open you cooling system.

If you dont have access to a vacuum pump then you can also use the bleeder screws....
