LT1 Camaro dies intermittently

97 Camaro will die and not restart once in a while, usually in the first 2-3 minutes of running. Fuel pump is good, has a newer msd coil. The engine will not even try to fire when I attempt to restart it. Then after a couple of minutes it will fire right back up and run like normal. I'm thinking it's ignition related and leaning towards the opti. Any thoughts?

My ignition switch got worn out and the car would die and sometimes it took time before restarting. I also had a starter that was so worn out that it would do what you are describing.

It will still turn over after it stalls, it just shows no sign of wanting to fire. It'll turn over till the battery dies and will smell like fuel's comin out of the tailpipe, just no fire which leads me to no spark. Then after a couple of minutes it will start right up and run normal as soon as I touch the key.

Coil may be getting hot and then not firing properly. Once it cools back down a bit it starts working again.

It's most likely the ICM which is mounted on the same bracket as the coil. You can have it tested at your local auto store. I'd recommend taking a heat gun or a hair dryer and testing it both at room temp and at an elevated temp.

If you do repalce the ICM don't forget the thermal transfer grease between it and the bracket.
