Heads are LT1s...

Hey Joe,

The car is making great power and torque even with 12:1 a/f ratio. We should have driveline back together by Tuesday and try the dyno again. If you don't mind we'll probably email the tune back to you for some more tweaks before the dyno session . Thanks again...or I may just come to you to get it perfect...

I want to see what that animal would do with longtubes. The LPE shorties may be very good but there still has to something left for longtubes to free up.

I think they are overkill most of the time but you found out the hard way why they make carbon fiber driveshafts, they just polish the dirt and paint off the undercairrage when they let go and feather out like a broom, maybe something to think about. LPE might also be willing to discount a shaft for you from everything I have heard they try to treat their customers well and while this failure I would not blame on them they may still be willing to help.

Well,

Something about the LPE shaft failure didn't sit well with me, so I measured the pieces and the shaft I have is 2 3/4" in diameter...a 1LE shaft maybe, but definitely not an LPE 3.5"!! I never measured it before because the original owner had told me that it was an LPE aluminum...I know that it's the one I've had since I bought the car because it's got a black mark on it all the way around from the Borla exhaust leaking onto it from a bad band clamp...

I've known the owner my whole life so I don't think he meant to deceive me, I just think he was mistaken, or someone screwed him along the way like what happened when he had the trans built a few years ago with stock internals while paying for a high end rebuild...Which explains why I never saw a receipt for the shaft in the paperwork...

Capricemgr...

I'm probably going to stick with the LPE shorties because I just got them Jet Hot coated in sterling and to tell you the truth This whole dyno mishap has dipped wayyyyy into other $$$$$ which I simply don't have. So I have to use what I have and try to get the best numbers/ET/mph that I can with this arrangement. I won't know if my transmission is broken until Tuesday when the car goes back together, but I'm hoping that since it was just built a few months ago with very strong internals by a reputable company that it will be ok; and I'm starting to save for a 9"....

I was not requesting you buy longtubes I am sure you are running them for a reason like smog or something. More just mentioned it for the sake of bench racing a little.

I spent the weekend putting a new nose on my car due to a deer incident last fall so trust me I know how suprize damage can dip into funds you either don't have or had otherwise allocated, oh and I am on my second tranny rebuild again unpleasant finacial suprize.

2.75 seems really small with the longer b-body shafts the performance ones start at 3.5" and some guys go bigger. Has to do with critical speed and the length we have to deal with which is I want to say over 4.5 feet, hence the need for sewer pipe sized shafts.

The one thing I've learned withthis "freshening" is to not take for granted that what is there is what it is....Not verifying what driveshaft I was running is a rookie mistake that I shouldn't have made after working on and with cars for 20 years....It would be fun to see what long tubes would do to this combo, but we have visual emissions check here in my part of PA and they are kind of sticklers....and I'm broke...

Car goes back together tomorrow with a new Spohn TA which mounts to the floor brace holes with TWO loops, and a new custom 3" steel shaft that F-Body Central uses on their customer's 9 second cars..then back to the dyno...

Well, we got the car back together on Friday...New tailshaft, new yoke, new 3" custom steel driveshaft with solid (no grease fittings) u-joints, new Spohn cross brace mounted TA with TWO loops with new longer rear bolts, and a new Spohn/Prothane trans mount which uses a stud to secure the mount to the cross member. Thankfully, the transmission and the rear gears suffered no damage. The rear of the trans tunnel sheet metal will be a constant reminder of my stupidity, however.

The car is an animal again only this time I don't forsee anything falling off or exploding. I am in the market for a 9", though. Anyway, heavy rain kept us from driving down to Heffners dyno so we will try next week to see if I can improve on the 400rwhp/430rwtq it made before the BOOOM with a rich 12:1 a/f ratio. Joe pulled a little fuel out, but we need to dyno it and play with fuel and timing. We are hoping for 420rwhp and 440rwtq...Let us all pray for no more BOOMS...

Wow man, it sounds like a really nice setup. I am finishing up my solid roller (Jordon Musser grind) LT4-383 right now as we speak. It is going to be a big nitrous (~300-350 shot) motor. We are hoping for the 470-490rwhp on motor when we dyno it later this upcoming month.

These little 383s sure do make some power though. Good luck with yours and here is a prayer for no more BOOOMS.
