LPE/Joe Overton combo dyno #s...sort of

Decided to go with a small Joe Overton cam with E.B. Porting going through my LPE heads....Engine is an LPE 383 built in 1995 with 1000 1/4 mile passes with the following specs from LPE:
4 bolt Corvette block
Callies crank
Oliver 5.85" billet steel rods
JE pistons
Compression tested all cylinders with 205-220psi in all 8
Bottom end was left untouched...

LPE heads with 2.00/1.56 valves, titanium retainers CNC/hand ported at LPE
Freshened by E.B. Porting..new springs, valve job, seals, additional porting
Felpro 1074s yielding 11.2:1 comp.

Small Joe Overton cam 220ish/230ish .560ish lift int./exh.

Car is an A4 with Vig 3600, 3.42 gears.

Got almost one complete pull before driveline carnage...

400rwhp 430rwtq corrected with rich 12:1 A/F on a baseline Joe O. tune!

At 6100 rpm the LPE driveshaft broke in half taking out the tailshaft, Spohn TA, and rear yoke, and ventilated the rear trans tunnel a little . The car is an animal, yet is (was) very drivable on the street. Joe thinks I should get 420rwhp with some tuning. Talked to Steve Spohn about stock mounted TAs and his advice is to get the TA off of the transmission...so I pass this advice on to everyone...I just ordered to cross member mounted TA with TWO loops...

Bottom line is that Joe's stuff works great putting out very respectable #s..I'll update everyone when I get the driveline back together...

edit: all said and done after the porting and cam how much did it all cost?

Re: LPE/Joe Overton combo dyno #s...sort of

I sent Joe my already CNC/hand ported LPE heads and he sent them to Eric..Total cost of head porting/freshening and new cam was $800..

With traction Joe thinks I should run low 11's at 120ish

I don't really know what failed first...My LPE shaft is 10 years old..U joints appeared to be in good shape; we checked them beforehand and there was no play at all, but they were 10 years old...also I was running a Spohn TA mounted to the trans which cracked the tailshaft...We just don't know what happened first...The LPE shaft broke right in the center like it was cut with a knife...I think it was a combination of TA and old shaft. My advice for all is to get that TA off of the transmission and get one with TWO loops...Steve Spohn concurs...

I know that there are plenty of people running with more power without these kind of failures, but all I can say is that Joe's cam makes MASSIVE flat torque throughout the entire rpm range. It jumped right to 400rwtq as soon as we whacked it in 3rd peaking at 430 and only gradually falling off as the rpms increased...This is going to be one awesome street car..

We are thinking 420rwhp and 435-440rwtq when we fine tune the tune...I'm just hoping that Heffner will let me on his dyno again....

Anyone out there want to sell me a 9"?

good #'s man.

400 RWHP with ported heads and cam in a 383 is NOT a given and anyone that thinks so needs to build one their self.

ANY 383 making 400 RWHP thru an A4 with a mild cam is impressive. Some do not make 400 RWHP with a much larger cam and 6 speed.

It should run real good once you get the drive trane lined out.

Thanks Lloyd....I appreciate it..

Like I said we are hoping for around 420rwhp with a tweaking of the tune. I'll find out Monday or Tuesday if the transmission was hurt. Everything else is fixed...By the way for those with the LPE driveshaft...I was in NO WAY knocking the LPE driveshaft at all...It served me well for 10 years. I guess I was foolish to think that the u-joints were ok even though they appeared fine and had no vibration and plenty of grease. Everything is subject to fatigue. Aluminum doesn't bend it just breaks, and after 10 years I think it and the u-joints just failed.

I'll probably never know what broke first, but I'll make sure it doesn't happen again..The good thing was that no one was hurt and no Vipers at Heffners got damaged (thank God)...

Hey those are some really nice numbers. It is suprising how those smaller cams make so much power. Sometimes i wish that i had gone with a joeo cam...oh well.

I agree great numbers for such a mild cam.

I wouldnt mind getting into some Joe O stuff, but the problem lies it getting it from him, last I heard he quit doing cams for people. Although I guess I'll call sometime and find the real deal.

A cam similar to that size is what I am looking for too. Whats the LSA and how much does strictly the cam run?

Hey Dustin I sent you a PM....

I think Joe got a little frustrated with some people on this and some other message boards...I don't know what happened. I think that he is slowly getting back into doing cams again especially with the PR he got from GMHTP...and his website: Lethalefi.com and the corresponding Lethalefi forum which you can access from his site under the "ask Joe" or "Contact Joe" links...

I 've got nothing but great things to say about Joe and Eric and the product that they produce...I wanted a bigger cam than my little 211/219 that it replaced, but I wanted it still to be a small cam for good street manners, boy did Joe nail it for me...I'll be back on the dyno next week as long as my trans isn't broken (crossing my fingers, toes, etc...)

Alan,

Great numbers man. I hope to add to the pleased Joe O cam owners soon. I am going to the dyno next weekend. After having this came for about 8 months now. Your numbers have really encouraged me. The car feels absolutely awesome. Tourque monser to be exact. It's larger than yours. Good luck this time on the dyno. Let us know how it goes.

Congrats.

Thanks Mike...and I think I forgot to mention that my exhaust is LPE shorty 1 3/4" headers, Random Tech Y-pipe (gutted cat) and a Borla cat-back run with no plate (wide open..)

I guess you don't necessarily need long tubes to make power with LT1s...

Congrats on the #s and I am sure that the times will be very good. It sounds like a great combo. I made some pretty good #s with my little LT1 as well

NICE NUMBERS!

Are your LPE heads LT1 or LT4?

I had E.B. do my LT4 heads that were from LPE and Joe did a solid roller cam for me. I can't wait to get it finished. I'm so close.
