Re: Lifters and pushrod install

The motor was just cleaned and bored .030. The cylinder walls were pitted due to rust. Heads were not touch and i bought stock replacement head gaskets from autozone. The lifters that were installed were used from my previous motor. I don't know if there's 1 sticking or what. The car drives great but I want to get this fixed before something bad happens.

When i first adjusted them, I used the method in the manual. I didn't feel comfortable with it so I adjusted them with it running. The noise isn't constant, so i have no idea. I can do alot of things but I'm just not comfortable doing this....

Yes sir. I was mearly saying I find #3 to be the easiest to not make a mistake and given there is also the engine running method this gives the op 4 choices to see if he feels more comfortable with doing one. Not at all sayi g anythi g you said was wrong or in error other than a rebuilt motor or any changes in valvetrain including lifters could cause a change or a need for different size lifters. Its my understanding that the most common reason for collapsed lifters is mismatched valvetrain components and the noise the op is concerned about may be pointing to this as valvelash, spring rates and pressures and pushrod length all have important parts to play in things working well.

Chet, did you rule out an exhaust leak between the head and the exhaust manifold? A leak there will sound like a ticking and many have confused this with a lifter going bad.

An exhaust leak would be constant right? I did just get my long tubes on with copper gaskets. So we will see soon.

Exhaust leak "tick" will vary with throttle position, engine load, and engine temperature.

often as the engine gets hotter exhaust leaks between manifold and head or even further downstream can get quieter as the metals expand....but the leak is still there, just not sometimes as noticeable.

if you have a scan tool showing one bank is running rich, that is often due to a exhaust leak and the 02's see more air so PCM commands more fuel to be dumped

I have always had good luck with the FelPro exhaust manifold gaskets with headers
