largest streetable cam?????

what do you guys think the largest streetable cam is in a full tilt 383. I have the motor already and was thinking about lowering the compression and changing the cam to make it more " streetable " The car is a 96 TA 6 speed with a moser 12bolt and 4.56 gears it is not going to be a daily driver but would like to get more use out of the car and don't feel like runing race gas to feed the 13-1 compression. I got the motor of a friend and would like to detune it... it already went 10s Thanks ART

Re: largest streetable cam?????

Well, you've got a stick, so you can get away with more cam than an AT guy can, even with a converter. You've also got high compression and a lot of cubes.

Your question is kind of hard to answer in absolute terms, because "streetable" is such a loose term. However, you would probably want to increase your duration on both sides and let your LSA tighten up along with it.

I'm not mentioning specific numbers because what you REALLY need is a custom cam; and whoever grinds it for you can talk numbers.

Also, I don't know what size head gasket you're using, nor what your quench is. You might be able to use a thicker gasket, but don't let your quench open up past .040, because you'll make your engine more likely to detonate.
And of course, if your heads are off; you can have them shaved, although that can cause it's own sort of troubles.

Talk to a custom cam grinder first.

Re: largest streetable cam?????

the heads are 52cc, head gasket is already at .030 and the cam is a 245-253 with .640 lift i/e on a 112 cl I guess I would like it to run on pump gas, the dcr is too high.. maybe I just need to lower the compression

Figure your DCR before cutting the compression,ya may be fine like ya are depending on cam.

I am running a 260/270 mech roller on the street with 12.97 compression on 92 octane pump gas. It all depends on your idea of driveabality

Re: largest streetable cam?????

hey Larry its Art, you figured my DCR for me before but it was to high for pump gas I was thinking about something that would run on pump gas instead of the cam that was in someones black car Later

I wouldn't be affraid to run that cam(the one that is in it),but the compression is to much. I would pull it apart and put two more fly cuts in the pistons and use a .039 gasket (I can figure it) and get rid of the low tension rings.
Ya might be about right with those mods.
