K&N no good for 97 SS? Check it out.
The K&N's are good filters. The shop that built my engine put one in my SLP Ram Air airbox, without even asking. Its their "standard" for performance applications. I've been running the same filter for 8 years. I've never seen any evidence of "dusting" in the airbox. Follow the K&N instructions regarding cleaning intervals. Do not clean it too often, unless sbujected to extremely dusty conditions.
FWIW my experience w/K&N has been very positive. I ran on in my '89 z24 from new to 128,000 mi and upon teardown the factory crosshatch cylinder hone pattern was visible and the main & rod bearings were perfect. That engine never used a drop of oil
Ive been running twin K&N filters on my SLP CAI in my Camaro for 10+ years and never found ANY evidence of any dirt/dust from the filter to the inside of the throttle body. YMMV

I've read some claims but not seen many real comparisons. However if you just look at the design of the two types, the stock SS intake airflow literally has to flow 360* to get into the intake. Most FIPK's are more direct, so they should be a little more efficient. But by how much?? Maybe 1hp??
You could correlate higher HP numbers with the bottom-feed SLP CAI (similar to K&N FPIK). I think there are way too many other variables to make a blanket statment that one consistantly makes more power. HTH

In the Oct 1997 issue of Super Chevy (p. 36) they did a dyno comparison between a '97 SS and a '97 Z28 equipped with the GMPP "F-1" package, essentially identical cars (trans, gears, mileage, catback) except for the air induction (F-1 used the SLP CAI) and the F-1 dynoed at 266.3 HP/295.3 ft/lbs. The SS was 254.9 HP/293.4 ft/lbs.

Don't put too much stock in dyno numbers or comparison tests. As the poster mentioned there are many variables. Maybe the test was a stock paper filter in the SS versus the cloth filter in the CAI....
Cars differ, dynos differ, ambient conditions differ so about all you can do is look at relative differences. Something like 'a car equipped with a K&N filter makes approximately 10 more horsepower than one without'...
