K&N no good for 97 SS? Check it out.
Found this little FAQ for the SS, is this true? I need to replace my filter and was about to get a K&N but then i saw this....

Q. Can I use the K&N Filter on my SS?
Absolutely not! Contrary to adds run by Lingenfelter and others K&N specifically has told us that their filters cannot currently be used on the 96-97 Camaro SS. Although they may look like they fit, under pressure they leak air and dirt into the manifold and for this reason are NOT RECOMMENDED. List members who have tried them have since gone back to the standard air filters. The filter that they have claimed fit is the K&N # 33-2018 for the Jeep 2.5L, 4.0L F/I Panel Filter. Please folks don't use it.

Q.What is the Standard Air Filter on the SS?
For the 98 SS it's stock filter is a AC Delco A917C or part number 33-2014 However that does not fit perfectly. Much better is part Number 33-2111 that fits the LS1 airbox better - same as the 1997 and 1998 Corvettes. The 1996 and 1997 use one of three different filters. Either the Purolator A24372, NAPA GOLD part #6077, or the AC Delco A1166C. The one in the 1997 Owners Supplement is incorrect.

the one they list for a 97 camaro will not fit in the stock ram air box...i had to use the measurements off my original air filter and match one up from the dimensions of the original one. i believe the measurements for mine ended up being the filter that fits a jeep of some sort
This has been argued about for YEARS!!! I and many, many others have been using the K&N filter in our stock SS filter box for just as long. Mine fits perfectly with NO gaps and NO air bypassing the filter.
There is no question that some people had problems getting a correctly fitting filter, because the common replacement number listed on web sites and by K&N did not seem to fit well. There may also be some slight variation in the dimensions of the SLP filter boxes.
If you cross reference a stock replacement filter number, (say a Fram's CA3901), you will get four possibles from the K&N site. #33-2018, 33-2084, 33-2122, & 33-2175. Each of these filters are just slightly different in length, width, and height. For instance, the 33-2018 is (L)13.375X(W)6.563X(H)1.563, while the 33-2175 is (L)13.438X(W)6.625X(H)1.063.
So, if you measure your box you should be able to fine a filter that fits right. In my case the 33-2018, (the Jeep one) is perfect.
The problem is that most people won't do this much research, and so just throw their hands up and say it won't work!!!!

i have run k&n filters in other vehicals and have had my intake dusted, i wouldnt use there filters on a dang go kart.
once u clean the oil out of them and hold it up to the light u can see holes in the filter , so thats my take on them ,
u can get any better filtration then a paper element .
the only filter i have seen do the best in filtration and not dust your intake and flows good is the AEM dryflow cone filter

I just picked up a Purolator A24372. It fits perfectly.
I rather just buy the K&N FIPK unit if i'm going to upgrade to K&N. It seems like that's the best option. Can anyone verify if this is the correct one to get for a 97 SS?

Personally I like having my inlet on top of the hood. It's quite low around here and I've been able to drive though some fairly deeply flooded roads.
Also I haven't seen any conclusive dyno. result showing that the FIPK is any more efficient then the stock SS hood/intake with the K&N filter.
