Did you have to break the air conditioning lines loose or could you set the compressor to the side?

Dont know, I removed the AC the first time I pulled it. But I would guess that given the right amount of manuerving (sp) you could move it out of the way.

I just dropped mine out the bottom for the first time. I left the a/c in and floated the compressor in the engine bay. It was a bit more trouble than opening the lines would be.

I used a pair of concrete blocks under the rear tires and jackstands on my ramps to raise the front. Other than that, I only used a floor jack and no cherry picker. I left the front wheels on. No helpers were available, so it was just me.

Sure was easy to reach stuff and disassemble the engine with it out of the car.

[edit] Who says STBs are not useful? Nice for keeping the shocks from flopping (and a nice towel rack).
