intermittent problem
intermittent problem
i guess thats the right word to use?
anyways...ocassionally, about once a week, when i give my car some gas it will cut off and then come back on. if you just barely give it some gas its ok, but if you push it down to 1/4 throttle and it just dies then come back up. like someone is turning the key off. doesnt miss or anything, just quit.
maybe the fuel pump is about to go...
but i dont know if it would cause it to do that or not?

Re: intermittent problem
The fuel pump would have difficulty at higher rpm, not sudden instantaneous changes in loading. It is a thought though. Without more information, I would just suggest ensuring all your routine maintenance is done (filters, fluids, cleanliness, pcv, etc). Next I like to check my fuel pressure at idle and do a leak down check. Another good check would be for vacuum leaks. Do you still have emissions hooked up?

Re: intermittent problem
i have egr but no air injection...
if you look at the tach and say it is steady on 800 or whatever, then pat the gas, the tach will not raise. it will just instantly fall to near zero then come back up to idle...really weird if you ask me!
this will last for about 5-10 minutes then it will drive normally afterwards!

Re: intermittent problem
have you checked all your sensors? Do you have scanning equipment available?
Have you checked to make sure your EGR isn't stuck open??
what about those other tests I suggested?

Re: intermittent problem
Most parts stores have scanners available to use or to rent. Also, for the EGR test, just apply vacuum to the EGR diaphragm while the engine is idling. You should make it stumble and/or stall. If it does not, this indicates that your egr is stuck open.
Have you done a fuel pressure test with a guage. These you can also rent, or buy they aren't that expensive. You could have your fuel pressure set improperly (failing regulator?).
Another thought, have you checked your air intake for some sort of obstruction?

Re: intermittent problem
these questions you are asking me...could they be causing the problem i am talking about? it will idle just fine and start just fine, until you jab the gas peddle. if you push it gently it is fine and will rev up like it should...in gear or in neutral, doesnt matter.
and like i say 99% of the time it is fine, just occasionally does it do this. maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 3 weeks.

Re: intermittent problem
usually, spark problems will leave you with a stutter, not just a dying out. Fuel and air problems can give you what you are talking about. It sounds exactly like when I tried to open up my bike's intake tract.... it would rev just fine without load, with small throttle increases, but blip the throttle and it would bog down BAD... it wasn't getting enough fuel. I would really recommend hooking up a fuel pressure gage, doing a pressure test, a leak down test, and if you can do a driving test and try and repeat the problem and see what fuel pressure does...
it could also be air... like the car is choking.... or sensor related, something with the PCM not being happy...
It would help if you had some scan logs..

Re: intermittent problem
ill check in to getting a fuel pressure gauge and checking the pressure. i have a friend that tunes these things, ill see if i can get a hold of him and get him to scan it one day.
Re: intermittent problem
Don't need a scanner, just a paper clip to retrieve the codes in a 93. doubt you will find anything though. Also, check to see you have a vacuum leak.

Re: intermittent problem
Nope, but we are going to moorseville tomarrow. I'm going to get a 8.40 out of kellys car watch
Bring the car to the next dyno tuning event i'm doing or just swing it by the house and we look at it.
