Intake problem please help..

Just installed a new K&N cold air intake and not sure its working right.

1995 Z28, when the engine is cold, at startup, I can hear it sucking air from somewhere around the main intake elbow area but as it begins to warm up, the suction sound tends to lessen, until it finally disappears completely, at that point you can start hearing the K&N sucking air.

Also, when I lift the elbow a little with my hand it causes the motor to start choking. The more I lift the elbow the more it chokes until it eventually cuts the air supply completely and the engine dies.

Is this normal or are there any suggestions that might help..

Thanks,

Sounds like the bottom of the intake elbow is not correctly connected to the throttle body. It isn't unusual for it to "fold under" and not slip correctly over the TB. Check there first.

Either that or the rubber intake elbow is ripped. They don't last too long as rubber tends to crack after being heated and cooled so many times under the hood.

Thanks, I'll take a look just thought it might have a cold start valve or something causing it to draw air from somewhere else until it warms up. Noticed a 9-10in long duct coming from the bottom of the elbow straight down..

There is no "cold start valve" on an LT1. The tube you see running down the front of the engine, from the intake elbow is simply a "silencer" tube, and is closed at the bottom. Nothing should leak in there.

That would be the "donkey dong". You can remove it and cap the hole in the intake elbow with the bottom of a Pert Plus shampoo bottle and some tape. It doesn't do anything other than quiet the intake down a bit.

You're right! The rubber under the elbow was crimpped and the edges around the hose clamp are ripped. I will need a new elbow. Any idea where I can get one cheep?

I think gmpartdirect has it for around 45.00 plus shipping, or you can go to your dealer and pay 60.00. Thats what I did. For the extra 10.00 it was worth getting it right away. Mine was FUBAR.

Get the 1LE elbow, same thing without the silencer, plus the rubber is thicker. I doubt you'll get one at the dealer for $60. Use one of the discounters, Dal or Jason. GMPD charges a fortune for shipping.
