installing opti right now. little, easy question
installing opti right now. little, easy question
I notice a mark on the rotating side of the opti that is between two of the recesses for the bolts. Should this point and fit right next to the little dowel pin? I was gussing this little notch matches up with the pin on the cam but was not sure and could not find this specific question answered anywhere on the forum. thanks guys.
p.s. last night I installed my dual roller (takes very little clearancing) it pressed right on no problem and is MUCH tighter then the stock unit. I had a buddy look at my timing chain and it was stretched about a half a centimeter!! My crank sprocket for the old timing set has grooved marks where the chain has worn into the teeth. Glad to see it go to say the least. the new set is Tight! and fits fine. Installing timing cover was easier then I thought. cleaned it up, deburred it here and there, clearanced, instlaled plug for waterpump drive (two washers, a lock washer and one fine thread bolt. Bolt pointing from inside out and tightened to the point of almost bending washers so it does not have a chance of loosening up. Biggest problem with install was using a razor to scrape off the old timing cover gasket. I used red rtv all around any spots at the lower timing cover/oilpan area. the old oilpan gasket was stuck very well to the bottom of my timing cover and never came off. i threw some red rtv on and around the sides and will tighten up the two last bolts when i finish the install to tigten her up. Dont think there is any chance of a leak though. the opti bolted down nice and tight and I don't want to do any more until I have my hub bolt from summit and know for sure the orientation of the opti wheel.

Here's a diagram for ya http://shbox.com/1/opti_back.jpg
okay then that raises the question of how do I measure to see if my dowel is too long? I am using a generic aftermarket opti made for a 94-95 and I have a 95. there should be no problem with fitment but how snug is the opti supposed to be when bolted down? How do I measure the dowel? i am guessing if the dowel is too long you dont know until you start your car and the bearing is twised sideways in the opti and it tears up. I do feel like the old opti came off easier then the new on went on. What is a sure way to not screw anything up. Can I shorten the down at all if need be?
dowl should be between 0.620"-0.685". Not sure how an opti could work for a '94 or '95 because the drive mechamisms are very different.
It takes a quick pop with the palm of your hand usually to make it fit flush to the timing cover due to the o-ring fitting in.

I am going to compare it ot the old one and make sure it is ok before everything is put together for good. Things like this aren't worth chancing. When I was installing my mcleod dual clutch I thought somthing wasn't right with the floating disc and sure enough there was a shim that was about 1.5 to 2mm thick that would have destroyed the whole thing had I installed it that way and not taken the time to check things over and over. I am going to check and post a messege.
I'd measure both the dowel length and the aluminum backing case thickness to make sure both are in spec.
I'm pretty sure now that I fragged a GM opti and an Autozone opti because one or both of those measurements were off.

Shoebox also shows you how to measure the dowel pin:

Could you please explain how a "generic" Opti can fit both a 94 (unvented/splined drive shaft) and a 95 (vented/dowel pin drive).

thank you injuneer. that page was just what I needed. I am going to tkae the opti off and see how easy it comes off and how things are. I am going to dig up the old one and look at the clearances and measure things with a micrometer or the good ol finger test. maybe use some kind of clay. I will post when I know. late thursday when I get out of work..
