installing a 847.. some last questions
i do plan on getting better heads in the future. its a non stop process. iv recently starting posting here and seems like a lot of **** talkers on here (not you bowtie racing). I know im not gonna get all my power from the cam and all that. i know/heard it all. BUT in my defence i plan on building the motor up when it finally dies. So im not gonna put a stupid little cam in it now for the time being then need to buy ANOTHER cam later.... thats just ****in stupid!! So for now ill save my change for a motor and drive around a "slow" car that sounds like a 8sec. car. later guys.

That made me giggle a little
But what happens when your motor gets trashed, it ended up messing up a cam bearing, or damaging the cam badly itself?
Personally I'd go with what my car could handle with a stock bottom end, and when it finally does die, due to whatever cause, build it to exactly how you want it

847
not trying to argue but this cam has seen high 11 to low 12 second timeslips with stock heads with the right setup, so for slow it might not be. mine probably pulled 12.5 with mild ported heads and the cam. If I wouldv hooked.

It funny you mentioned that you want it to sound like a 8 sec, car. That's what I though when you first started defending your choice, that you don't care about what's best, you just want a car that sounds fast.
ahh let him do what he wants, just try to help him with getting it together. I put 10,000 miles on my stock shortblock a 1/4 mile at a time never babied it before I finally spun the bearings. If he has good oil pressure or puts in a higher pressure pump and doesn't free rev it like I did mine all the time his will probably last alot longer than mine did. I only had 18 psi at idle when i installed my cam. If he drives it normal and then just races it sometimes it'll probably last a long time, depending on current condition of the shortblock. But you definately want to get some ported heads if you dont have them some people run good on stock heads but thats just robbing power.
Taubr unit don't get me wrong i just wanted to let you know my experience with this cam in a Stock headed stock bottom end LT1... it sounds mean and makes decent power 353hp/358tq but it wants every bit of 6800 rpms and won't miss a beat while spinning that high if i knew i would be without my car for a year while i build the 396 because of the 847 cam i would of put a smaller one in while i was building the new motor now all the car does is sit!!! theres alot of days i want to drive it but i cant i've done just about every bit of research i could about the 847 cam in a stock LT1 doing searches and reading info back from 03-04 when it was just about a new camshaft out on the market and it all came back to spun rod bearings in the end so hell i thought i could beat it since i wasent going to be at the track that much but i was wrong..... So im without my car!!! All i can say Bro is to keep the install clean, oil everything, and make sure everything is good and hopefully you will have better luck then i did. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
On the upside though it did give me a excuse to re-build the car from the front all the way to the back. right now im at about 10k for a new motor/trans/rearend along with expensive accessories sh*t adds up quick.

yea, iv read horror stories and great stories about big cams. There always 2 sides to each quarter i guess. People say its good if your going for a fast cam only car and some say it kills the motor. I guess i roll the dice and see how far it takes me. No turing back now, its in and ready to be started so well see how long it lasts.
I'm not trying to be a **** talker but you should have went with a smaller cam. The 847 with stock heads is just a bad idea, whats the point of having a cam that opens the valves that much if the ports in the head can barely keep up with a Hot Cam?
Sorry, but planning on installing a cam to blow your motor up so you can build another one around that cam just doesn't make any sense to me. You need to build a motor, weigh the car, and talk to some custom cam makers and have them cut you a cam for your needs and plans for the car.
I'm not trying to be an *******, but that is a big cam for a stock motor.
BTW make a sig listing your car, year, and its mods. That will help in the future
iv just started on this site so i havent got time to make a sig. I would have just kept the cam on my shelf till i did my motor but threw it in now for the summer so i had a little somthing to get me goin. eaither way its gonna be faster then the stock cam so for the time being its good for me. And my motor will last pretty long due to i drive it one a week maby fewer.
This guy is obviously "domestic" ricer. He doesn't want to build a fast and reliable car, he just wants the image. He might as well as toss on a Spoiler, Topfuel hood scoop, and some giant M/Ts. That way his car will look super duper fast as it sits in his driveway with a blown engine.

On paper.... On the track it will be a diferent story.
There is a Long thread that Ion (madz28.com) did about people that ran large cams and don't rev them to where they should be. It was a funny and entertaining thread just like this one.
Matter of fact, here it is....
