indexing opti?

so i did it wrong and on shoebox's website it says to line up the notch with the one in the cam gear. My question is how do i see that? Do I have to take my timing cover off to see where it goes on the cam gear. The first time it went in I just slid it in with no problems but I didnt even check for it to be indexed. Im really confused and it obviously wasnt right because my car wouldnt even run. But wouldnt my opti not fit right if it were wrong

You can easily look into the timing cover and see where the dowel pin is. It will probably be at 3 or 9 o'clock, if you have rotated the engine to get the opti to clear the hub.

You can use the markings on the back of the opti to line up the slot for the dowel. You can also make a mark with a Sharpie or something on the top side of the opti drive, so you can watch it from above and see that it does not move while installing.

In spite of his screen name, it appears he has a 94. So I think he's talking about the splined shaft?????

Nothing like confusion to help things along...

yea sorry about that it is the 94. The formy got sold and I decided to not change my name. Anyways thats exactly what I did shoebox. I stuck my head in there and turned the crank until the notch was at the very top. Then I turned the shaft on the opti until it would match up with that and it slid right on. Now for my next question I cranked it up with everything but the wp and its componets hooked up and it ran horribly. How rough would it run on the tune I had for previous mods (the ones in the sig) with the 224/230 on a 112 with comp 987 springs and 1.6 rockers. It wouldnt run unless I gave it a little bit of gas and then it would jump to about 2000 rpm. There is only one wire that I cant remember where it goes. Its a two pin that is tied into the same bunch as the IAT sensor and actually kinda looks like the IAT sensor itself but it doesnt fit. I can provide a pic if that would help. Thanks for all your help guys

Look at my 95 harness and see if you can spot the connector you have doubts about.

Sounds like you didn't hook up the coolant temp sensor on the water pump housing. That would cause it to start extremely rich, and possibly produce the results you are getting.

Yea I did, I made sure that was on as I put the intake system back on, but if I didnt I believe it would run in speed density mode so that wouldnt make it run that much different

this is sounding more complicated than I remember from last night when i installed mine.... i just lined up the dowel pin with the only spot it would fit on the opti, which would only fit into one spot the timing set If there was something I overlooked here id like to know before i put the waterpump back on.

well yours is a 95 so you have a vented opti and its a little bit different. Mine is the splined shaft. Yours relies on the dowel pin.
