importance of smog/air pump??
importance of smog/air pump??
I'm doing a top end rebuild on my car. The air injection lines are sure ugly and clustering up a lot of space. I live in indiana where legality isn't necessarily an issue, but it could be in the next 10 years. I'm wondering how much that air pump actually helps emmissions and if it's worth keeping. it'd sure clear up some space without, but i hate to go through the hassel of putting all this back on in 5 years to be legal. i don't think we'll ever get much farther than mandatory yearly sniffer tests, but who knows. I'm going to be buying jethots and i have to choose between lt's with or without air hookups. need some advice...
Re: importance of smog/air pump??
if your going to be putting in LT's, i really dont see the need to keep the smog pump to try and pass an emissions test some day. you wont pass emissions with long tubes even with the pump. i do believe that you can put on shorties, keep the pump and you will pass emissions. someone else will have to verify this info for sure.
Re: importance of smog/air pump??
If you diable the AIR you'lll have to have the code edited out so you won't throw an SES light, however your AIR monitor will stay not ready.
Here in buffalo we're allowed 2 not readys to pass an OBDII scan for emissions.
You'll need 3 out of 5 monitors to pass.

Re: importance of smog/air pump??
94 odb1's are not too sensitive to smog and air. usually, u can unhook them and the computer wont do a thing.... but since i'm doing a cam swap, custom tuning will be apparent anyway
Re: importance of smog/air pump??
LT's can fail the visual inspection as the cat(s) are not allowed to be relocated from their stock position. The further back the cats are located, the colder the exhaust gas and then the cats don't work as well (they rely on heat to function).
Re: importance of smog/air pump??
technically, you're not even allowed to touch the cats before 75,000 miles (or close) unless there is a problem with them...if you want to be strict. In states like mine, we probably wont see much more than sniffers. there are no mandatory visual inspections in the midwest as far as i know.?
