I Hate Gm Engineers

Whoever designed the LT1 Fbody needs to be tarred feathered

1: Stupid *** Opti$park and waterpump

300 bucks to replace it. Its a DISTRIBUTOR for cryin out loud. Oh yeah, put it behind the water pump so it can get wet and die. Its more fun to change it back there too! And they used the CHEAPEST f'ing bearings too. Both my water pump and opti had to be replaced because of worn out bearings. Thats $400 dollars in parts for a bearing change. BS BS

2: Plugs and Wires

WTF....why should it take all day to change plugs and wires. The drivers side is fine, but the passenger side is a nightmare. Especially with AIR, EGR, and stock manifolds. Design the motor so you can access plugs and wires easily. WE HAVE TO CHANGE THEM EVENTUALLY

3: Window motors

The slowest pieces of junk i've seen in a car. Is it too much to expect my passenger side window to roll all the way up without having to stop and take a rest??? Even new motors are slowwwww. After 20 years you would think they could manage to put in some decent window motors.

4: Rear of INTAKE

The underside of my car is covered in oil and my clutch is slipping because GM engineers couldn't seal the intake well enough. Plus they stick a stupid EGR tube right next to it. Hot/cold = expansion. These type of things should not happen on modern vehicles.

5. Transmission hump

why give the mustang guys a reason to rag on us? Other cars seem to be able to get around this problem.

6. Fuel pump

Whining piece of junk. And no I'm not talking about myself. So if I run low on fuel i may fry my pump because it will exposed and needs fuel to cool itself. Don't make it run so hot in the first place! My friend would run his honda prelude out of fuel twice a month and it never had fuel pump issues.

7. T tops:

FIND A WAY TO STOP THE LEAKS. Unfortunately sometimes it RAINS. Yes this is true people, it rains. Not just on the flats either. Uphill, downhill, sidehill....they shouldn't leak, even after 8 years.

8. Gas gauge

I mean cmon.....is it too much to ask to have a gas gauge that reads "full" when it is full, 1/2 when it is 1/2 and empty when it is empty. I'm tired of my nosediving-after-1/2mark- piece of junk fuel gauge. I don't care if the tank looks like a V , adjust your method of measuring the fuel then!

9. Tranny growl

My car is not a bear, so why does it growl at me in the low RPM range?? I don't care if it is normal or not....it shouldn't happen.

10. Foglights

PITA POS

11. Cooling system:

This is the only car I know of that makes you "bleed" the cooling system. WTF. It should have been designed so it doesn't trap air.

12. CAGS:

Lame a$$ shortcut to pass emissions. Annoying and retarded. Should have focused on making the engine more efficient instead.

13. 10 bolt rear

no comment needed.

Feel free to add to this thread. I wonder if we can make it to 100?? the LT1 GM engineers needed to put the crack pipe down and slowly walk away.......

It's all been lamented before. Our cars are not the only ones to have half the problems you listed.

You can always buy something else and find another set of problems.

Every car out there has its good and its bad points. We buy them for the power the rest we overcome and figure out better ways to fix the problems...jmho

Thats exactly it...everysingle car has its own set of problems...if properly maintained the LT1 cars are reliable...they have a few problems...but everything does...for example my mazda requires a timing chain every 60k miles...normal cost on that car is between 680 and 900 dollars just to do the timing...absurd...

I have had my share of problems too...same with everyone else....Don't feel too alone. I would never...EVER...trade the meager problems that can be solved with a little patience for another car that quite frankly would be easier to work on and maintain but one helluva lot less fun to drive. Just comes with the territory. I know I was cussin up a storm when I changed my opti out but it did it's job very well for 122,000 mi. $300 and just a couple hours every 100,000+ mi. Ya....I'll take that any day of the week!!

haha well most of those are true, though I have had literally zero problems on my car so far, other than normal stuff (tie rod end and groans and squeaks here and there).

To tell you the truth, the tranny hump didnt annoy me until you mentioned it!

Im sure I'll be cursing with you when I try to do my plugs for the first time. I have bought them, just havn't gotten up the nerve to do them yet.

Yes I realize that it is a performance car and problems are the nature of the beast...but still, many things are POORLY designed. People say it is reliable, except for the opti, waterpump, plug wires burning, intake elbow tears, intake leak...etc. Even those problems right there are too many. No wonder why domestics have a reputation for breaking down. Many mechanics around here straight up refuse to work on my car. I do the work myself anyways, but its amazing that they will not work on my car for any amount of money. That tells you something right there. I mean...even the stupid little hazard lights button. (14) First of all, you can't even see it. In a real emergency like a blowout, I don't think you are going to be looking around the steering column for that thing. Oh yeah...why can't they just make it a normal button, in plain sight. Whats with this pull out crap. No wonder why its called the hazard button....its hazardous to use it. It feel like it is going to break every time I use it. My 83 camaro had the same stupid button that my 94 has. 11 years and they still haven't changed it.

Yes I'm venting, but i'm still pissed that I just wasted my day doing plugs and wires. I haven't even finished yet, and I gave up on rerouting the passenger side in the stock wire looms. I could do plugs and wires on my mom's toyota camry in 5 minutes. (Not that it would ever need them done, since toyota routed the wires so they won't get burned.)

If this doesn't solve my stumbling problem i'm going to be really pissed and you will see the list grow very very very long....

edit: Delsoto....if the opti was the ONLY thing that went wrong in 122,000 miles you are one lucky ****.

To all you people who haven't experienced the wrath of GM engineers....your day will come...muahahahaha

Chill out.
YOU did not put a tranny in today did you?
I thought so.
I did, all day, but I had a good friend with me and we joked and cussed and smashed our fingers with a hammer and bashed our heads on LT collectors and listened to good rock and roll music and you know what?

I would not trade it for the world.
Let alone an easier car to work on.

Only reward I got was hearing my car run with open LT headers.
It was a good day.

Seems like there are a lot of folks that have GREAT reliability with their cars and others **** poor...it has to do with two things how YOU take care of it and how the PREVIOUS owners take car of them...mine's been reliable...my dads squad car great (he did go through 3 transmissions though but that was partly his fault) he never replaced an opti or a water pump...

Taking that long to do plugs and wires doesn't sound like an engineering problem.

If mechanics refuse to work on your car, they are simply lazy morons and I would not trust them to work on it anyway.

That sounds like a GREAT day! I enjoy working on mine and driving it. I know you're venting surfinmud, but just get your car fixed and enjoy driving it!

On your T top problem when you put them on, how are you doing it? Sounds like a dumb question but depending on how its done that could be the problem with the leaking...

I suppose you could put it on upside down, it would leak pretty bad then.
