I agree, I didn't buy a sport's car for fuel economy, or thinking that there wasn't going to be more involved versus some junky ol honda or somthing. I change mine every 3000 miles. Just because it's synthetic doesn't mean that it isn't going to get dirty.

I still do every 3 thousand but a lot of manufacturers are only reccomending changes every 4-6 thousand now depending on the different manufacturer. For example BMW, and the new Cobra, and I think the new vette only requires it every 5k. I just had this conversation with my friend yesterday and thought I would through that out there.

Hey Patman......here lies the problem. Almost everyone here in the board runs a CAI type system which utilizes that type of air filter. Sooooooooo.... that being said, everyone is right changing their synthetic oil every 3k or so right?

They could probably still safely go 5k I'm sure. Plus I highly recommend they not clean those air filters too often, as then the filtration will improve without them losing too much power. Even with a very dirty air filter in my car I only picked up 0.2mph in trap speeds by changing to a fresh one.

Patman,

What are your thoughts on oil changes using time as a determination of when to change? Say for instance, my car isn't a daily driver, and I put under 3K miles a year.

In a case like that, change it once a year and you'd be fine. My mom only drives about 3-5k per year, so I've now got her on a one year oil change schedule.

I don't believe anyone has proven yet that changing oil too much is a bad thing

It's true, it does cost almost as much as an oil change, however it's not like you need to do it for every interval (although I do, but I'm using oil analysis as a learning tool and don't mind the expense)

Besides, if you just do it once or twice, it could prove to you that you could double or even triple your intervals safely, and then in the long run you'd save money and waste less oil.

By the way, those of you who do 3k oil changes might want to read this funny bit written by a friend of mine:

I COMPLETELY understand that what I am doing is changing my oil unnecessarily often, but I am OK with that. I really do appreciate the information that you provide to us on the many types of oil. It is a true asset. I probably will get an oil analysis done just to see what happens. But as a guy I know always say, "Every man for his own"

Thanks Patman,

Those where my thoughts also, but I wanted to hear it from someone who knows. My concern was some kind of breakdown in the oil from all the sitting.

I must say some people showed their asses in this thread, and an example of mob mentality.

back to the original query

I use Redline Oil 20/50 with a slightly bigger K& N oil filter than OEM filter.

I change my oil/filter every 10K miles with a 5K mile filter change only (with 1 qt to top it off).

Getting close to 230K. And I very rarely hit 6 K RPM...

"... Just the facts Madam, just the facts ..."

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I ain't no tree hugger. Tree humper, maybe, especially those gnarly old ones with tight little holes and all (synthetic lube only), but not a tree hugger.

I was pointing out that synthetic doesn't come from nowhere, it uses lots of nonrenewable resources to make, which some guys assumed meant I was somehow against using when I was merely trying to *inform*.

And how did we get to a hybrid car and me being from there?

Well, in another 30 years we'll all be driving hydrogen fuel cell cars that we can make 1000 hp with on a gallon of water anyway so all this will be moot.

Edit:mispelled moot.
