How much would a dying alternator hurt power???

How much would a dying alternator hurt power???
Just wondering if an alternator on its last leg would hurt performance at all....
I would think it would because of most sensors and such need a certain voltage to work properly. my alternator finally started smoking the other day meaning it was gone. It would read fine at idle ,well a lil low, 13.0 , then when I got on it it would drop down to the middle of the red.....Just wondering how much if any performance loss that could have been causing me
