How much time to swap a longblock?

Looking to put together a shortblock (cast parts, just to replace my 146k one) with a set of ported heads and GM847.

Assuming I had the entire longblock together oil pan to heads, how long, on average, would it take to swap the motors? What do you guys normally do about wiring? Just seems like so many sensors, it'd take forever....

If your mechanical skills are average...I'd say a full day and a half. The wiring harness and sensors are no big deal. Once you get the 1st few harnesses plugged back onto their proper sensor...all the others will pretty much fall into place.

I just put mine in from the bottom, and man I'm gonna tell ya, that's the only way I'll ever do it again.

This way, you can put the intake, valve covers, alt/pwstrg/ac bracket on with units, water pump, throttle body, transmission, and headers on the engine before placing it in the car.

The only thing that I saw that I couldnt put on first was the starter, just for the fact of having to put the wires on it.

Nice mods too, that's the same thing that I'm putting in mine, ported heads and GM 847, forged bottom end and a shot of n20.

Break out the digicam and snap a few pics of where all the wires are routed and how they are routed. Like Carlos said, once the main wires are in place, all the others are easy. BTW, where are you getting a long block from?

I was going to do it from the bottom, just have heard it was easier. Where did you get your forged bottom end? I'd love a shot of nitrous too....

Thanks

I just did it again last night. My best time is 3 1/2 hours to a short block out of the car. Yesterday I took about 5 hours doing it entirely by myself other then the actual pull when my brother gave a hand. I am changing heads, and find it easier to pull it out and do it then doing them in the car. Its crazy that pulling the engine is easier, but it really is. Heads in the car last year took me a full day with 3 people helping. Compared to 5 hours by myself last night.

go from the top....EASIER. Once you get the engine from the bottom you still have to remove the stuff youd have to remove to take the engine out from the top.
Also dont have to disconnect the Power stearing, or AC. No need to refill A/C or anything like that.

Re: How much time to swap a longblock?

last night i pulled the transmission, motor, k member, shocks, spindles, wiring harness and computer in about an hour and a half.... its going to be easier going through the bottom. if you go through the top you have to worry about breaking stuff, and you have to remove the radiator..... knock the ac compressor off and the power steering pump and you won't have to drain any of those. and of course if you have a lift it'll be a lot easier
