how hot do headers really get?!??!

just finished installing my hooker lt's... but im paranoid about all the wires!! the drivers side is fine, i re-routed the abs wire and everything else is out of the way. but the pass. side is making me nervous. what did you guys do with the abs wire?? it has NO slack and pretty much cannot be moved. i just used heat reflective tape and cover the whole area.

now what i really want to know is how close to the headers do wires have to be to melt?? i mean wires are about an inch away, but is that too close?? does the wire actually have to touch the header itself to melt? im just trying to do this right the first time. anyone have any input or experiences with burning wires other than plug wires?? thanks in advance!

Use heat shield around all of the wires and do it as soon as possible!! An inch to headers for ABS wires is very close!! I have SLP shorties and they get HOT!!!

I rerouted both my ABS wires in my 94 and did not have to extend them.
Move the wires out of there, extend them if you have too.
I spent about 4 hours extending and rerouting wires, I was not hurrying by the way, if you do it now you will have alot less problems in the future.
Starter wire, Knock sensor and ground I extended and ran under the motor mount. O2 sensors I extended and rerouted.

headers get really hot.... by the time you get done turning the key and walk to touch them ... they will be hot

as long as the wires are not directly touching they shouldnt burn.... but make sure they arent touching

I think an inch away is fairly safe, but I don't take any chances. I carefully route wires and use tie wraps to hold wires where I want them to be. I alao own about every sort of wire insulation product that MSD and a few others sell. I use them liberally.

an inch is plenty of room

you saw how my wires were routed, some wern't too far away at all. i think the minimum distance i had was about 1/2 of an inch, and that wire was covered with heat reflective tape.

1 inch is tons of room

i dont think the stock wires will make it through all that heat, the best way to go is with an Acccel wire. these are the best wires when you're using headers. you should have gotten coated headers!!!!!!!!!!!!
